Summer Engineering Programs

Hi,

Does anyone have any more info about
"The Bridge Program for Scientists and Engineers"
or the
"First Year Summer Experience"

I know Bridge gives you credit and its free, but FYSE gives you a stipend and its free.

Anyone have any experience with either program, and know which one is better?

I can’t tell you much about FYSE, but my older sister did BRIDGE two years ago, and was a “mentor” for BRIDGE last year. I’ll probably be doing it this year. Primarily it’s a residential program to get students up to speed in math, but there’s a lot more to it than that. Depending on how you do on the math placement exam, you take a course. She placed into pre-calculus, took that over the summer with them, and started freshman year off with Calc I. She says if you place into calc it’s less of an actual course, and more of an exploration of math type thing, but you still get credit. There are projects, and workshops, and field trips, but she says the best part of it is learning the campus, and not looking as lost as all the other freshman come fall semester. lol She also says she’s pretty cool with all the people who were with her during her year, and even the kids she mentored the year after.

Technically BRIDGE isn’t free. there’s a $200 or $300 program fee, but they give it back to you on a meal card for for food while on campus.
Hope this helps!

btw…are you definitely going to UMD?

Not sure if I’m committing to CP yet, but its a possibility.

What if I’ve taken AP Calc BC and got a 5? What math course would I take? Would I still get credit?

I have no idea, I’m sort of in the same boat. By the end of this semester I’ll have Calc I&II credit from a local community college. I’m sure that we’ll still get credit for whatever course they place us in, but we’ll probably still start off with Calc III fall semester.
