Hi. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any summer programs, collegiate or pre-professional, with conservatory-level string faculty, and application deadlines that haven't passed yet?
I know, that's a lot to ask...

The focus doesn't matter so much, as long as there are individual lessons and practice time.

Thank you, all, for your replies and for your input!

Violadad, your links are very helpful. What’s the difference between festivals or programs? Are festivals tuition-free, pre-professional performance-oriented programs, such as T-wood, Spoleto, etc?

I’m looking for outstanding solo instruction–something like Aspen or MAW, I guess.

Keshet Eilon, in Israel, is violins only and the deadline is March 15. It is directed by Shlomo Mintz and has exceptional faculty. It is not free.
Summit Music Festival in Westchester County, NY has a late deadline. It is not free and I don’t think it is terribly hard to get into. It has some excellent faculty including Aaron Rosand (he costs extra).
Many of the free programs are orchestra or chamber music based and are highly competitive!

Just ran across the Mimir deadline today, which is April 14th.

goldenlynx, the terminology is often interchangeable, and there can be a fine line of distinction. There are the “camps”, often in a rustic environment, where music is the primary activity but also include other participatory non-music activities. These are geared more to the younger ages.

The differences, at least as I define it between program and festival are that the programs tend to be more instructional, whereas the festivals tend to be more performance centered, and access to visiting artists as instructors, clinicians may be limited.

In many, the lines are blurred, but I agree with your classification.

thank you bluepearl. keshet eilon sounds amazing, just what i’m looking for. however, i don’t think i can afford to go overseas. i am keeping it in mind.

violadad, that clarifies things for me. thank you. and thanks for reminding me about mirmir!

Bowdoin Summer Music Festival is not free, but is still accepting applications. They do have financial aid and some might still be available. The violin faculty is excellent.

Not a festival, but there is a program in Croatia that Joel Hoffman, head of composition at CCM, participates in every summer. He teaches the composition course, but there are also performance courses. I’ve looked at the website and its a bit difficult to tell the level, and the age range - although it does seem to be from high school to late 20’s? Anyway, the deadline isn’t until April 30.
