My hs student was accepted to a summer program in Boston that has no housing. It is 3 weeks long, in July. We've gone up before and I stayed at a hotel (which cost quite a bit, even getting a great deal on Priceline) but 3 weeks is a long time and 1- a hotel will get very expensive and 2- some (most?) hotels will not rent to a person for that long. Any ideas? We've had one other student from the program contact us to see if the kids can share a room but I don't think anyone will rent a room to 2 teens, both under 18yo.

What part of town are you looking for? Craigslist might be a good place to start. They have sublets and temporary section. Also calling local universities housing office explaining to them what you want. They maybe able to help you out.

Most universities allow for students to stay in the dorms during the summer, even if they have no affiliation with the university and aren’t doing anything at the university.

I’ll try the universities. I didn’t think they would rent out to unaffiliated minors.

Fraternites often rent out rooms for the summer. My son rented a room at a MIT fraternity for one summer job. It was very inexpensive and worked out well for him.

You may be able to find a sublet on Craigslist or on Facebook.

Please post the area in Boston and I (and others) may be able to offer more advice.

What is the summer program suggesting? What have their past participants done?

It is near Symphony Hall and all they recommended was Craigslist. They did put this other student in touch with us but, like I said, I think the kids may be a bit limited by their ages.

As previous poster claimed, the MIT fraternities do rent rooms over the summer to non-MIT students. Some are located in Boston on Beacon St, which is just down Massachusetts Ave from Symphony Hall (ie. easy walking distance) They would typically like to rent for the entire summer, but if they have space they might do it for three weeks.

Are you going to accompany him again? There are rooms by the week on craigslist, and I know of a couple of bed and breakfasts in Cambridge that rent that way too. Cheaper than a hotel. Have you looked into college dorms suggested, or possibly the Y, either in Boston or Cambridge? Maybe NEC or Berklee have rooms in their dorms-? Boston Conservatory? Northeastern? Those are all in the same area. Craigslist definitely has sublets that might fit, under “temporary.” If you are uncomfortable with craigslist, I suppose you could also contact a realtor.

If you’re with him, there are also people who will sublet an apartment for a few weeks. I don’t remember the website, but know somebody who was able to rent a house for a weekend in Philadelphia, and it was far cheaper than a hotel would be. People sign up to be in this database while they are away.

One would think that a summer program for high school students would have better options. I’m also wondering if you might be able to find a family on craigslist. You would, of course, want to probably interview everyone in person, but I bet there might be people, maybe who already have a high school student, who would be happy to make some extra money, and feed your kid and give him a bedroom.

Another possibility might be a nearby YMCA? I know there is one near Northeastern/Symphony Hall, Northeastern has even used it in the past to meet housing needs, before some of their newer halls were built.

Good luck!

I don’t know if I’d recommend an unaccompanied minor living in a YMCA. I actually lived there for a semester as a Northeastern student, and, while it was generally perfectly safe, the parts where the students lived and where the random people of any age were staying were very clearly divided with strong security to get into the students part. If you’re in the other part, you just don’t know who’s there… A youth hostel might be a similar but better option.

Symphony Hall is walking distance to Northeastern. Try posting your question with the Colleges/Northeastern threads. There are some very helpful parents and students there.

If you will be with him and can drive him into town, you might try some of the long term rental rooms in Waltham - they cater mostly to the business set who may need to be in the area for a week or two. It would be a short drive to the SHall area - or you could take him to a local subway stop.
