Summer Housing in DC

Being the genius that I am, I waited until the last minute to look for housing in DC for my intenrship this summer, or in about three weeks. I have an intenrship working at the Office of Presidential Correspondance at the White House, so I was looking around the Foggy Bottom area. I'm hesitant about looking at housing at Georgetown just because it's more expensive and I have a budget. I already looked at Airbnb, and I'm constantly on Craigslist looking for rooms to rent or sublet, but with no success yet. Does anyone have any other ideas of what I can do, or any one want to join me in my search for a place? Let me know!

GW?

WISH might still have availability too.

there’s not a lot of housing around Foggy Bottom… you should look at Cap Hill and also further north on the Red Line (Dupont, U Street, perhaps Tenleytown where American University is)

our son got housing through WISH a few years ago when he was at the Library of Congress. within a brief stroll to Capital Hill near Eastern Market. He had a corner one bedroom in a historic brownstone that was charming in its own run down way (rotten food in the oven, dirty kitchen, but good location). I will tell you that housing overturns in the summers for many Congressmen and women after six weeks so there are a lot of keys floating about. He was there all summer but many in the building turned over end of June for a whole new group. His apartment was robbed on day one by someone with a key…bye bye two laptops, sunglasses, loose change and TV. Even so the location was prime with WISH. Insure your laptops on your parent’s policies if at all possible.
Many interns choose to cross the line to Pentagon City where my other son lived two summers ago during an internship. This summer second son will be interning and living in Crystal City. Only one train change required. Tons of recent grads choose Arlington, Pentagon City etc with first jobs.
If you can get housing still at GW or American in their dorms, grab it. Always a good plan. Noticed that Catholic U has some housing as well. Don’t worry so much about distance from your job. The Metro is very good. If you are a recent grad or still in school, you should contact the Internship office of your college. They may have arrangements you do not even know about. Vanderbilt for instance has a Federal office since it is one of the biggest employers in the state. Do not hesitate to ask for help as most colleges do have an Internship office in DC where they contract for housing. One of my son’s friends reported that American U dorms were just fine for him, but GWU location is better I think. If you have a WH internship, you could also call your Congressman’s office to ask for leads. They have interns. Perhaps they will allow you to pay and join them.

Thanks everyone, especially Faline 2 for your detailed response. The cheapest options at GW and WISH are sold out. American still has open spaces and so does Georgetown. I might just choose to do Georgetown since it’s closer than American. I’ll also ask my college’s office where students stay when they do the DC program.

keep in mind the metro doesn’t go to Georgetown (if that matters to you)

AU probably still has availability. My daughter just got housing there last week.

Georgetown to the WH might be a PITA until you get the bus schedules under your belt since there is no Metro. I’d be more inclined to suggest American since it’s Metro-accessible
