Summer Housing Through BU

DD wants to stay in Boston and work next summer. She is thinking about doing an internship, and is investigating if BU housing would be approved. However, even if it is approved, it will be $3000 including food!!! Has anyone else stayed in the summer? Are there less expensive options?

It seems like some of the oncampus summer jobs come with free or discounted housing - has anyone ever done this? The student I spoke with at orientation said that he works 80 hour weeks for summer orientation, but that he loves it. Lots of fun - lots of energy! I thought he said his meals and housing were paid - has anyone done this?

Obviously, the cheapest option is to come home, which she is welcome to do, but she would prefer the opportunities that being in Boston would allow, and LOVES the city!!

Thanks for any guidance.

A sublet might be an option, but rents are high in general. I would do a comparison if I was her (see what rents are for sharing an apartment.). The $3000 may begin to seem not so bad, but an apartment might be more spacious.

as far as I know working for admissions and giving the tours are the only jobs that come with free housing…

Because of a miscommunication between the housing and orientation depts, I had the opportunity to talk at length with several of the orientation guides while we waited for housing issues to be resolved. The guides talked about the exceptionally long hours they work during orientations, with much more down time in between sessions. Everyone seemed to genuinely love what they were doing and were very enthusiastic about BU, which coupled with excited soon-to-be freshman, made the event an awesome experience. It seems like a great job for a friendly, enthusiastic, outgoing kid who loves her school!

Completely forgot I worked summer orientation at BU one year back in the 1980s! I am sure it is different now, though. Yes, I remember being very tired, because we had to work from morning until evening and put on a skit for the freshmen at the end of the night and there was some kind of dance party too. But it was only the weekends, so not 80 hours/week. I had a different (non-BU) job the rest of the week. During the orientation weekends, I was required to stay on campus in a single in Warren Towers. I remember resenting this because I liked my apartment with my boyfriend (now husband!) much better!
