Summer Humanities and Social Sciences Program INVITE?!

Wow. I was thrilled to receive a letter from Williams inviting me to participate in the Williams College SUmmer Humanities and Social Sciences (SSHS) Program. Did anyone else on CC receive an invite?

For those of you who are curious, I'll sum up what I got out of the letter:

The letter said, "SHHS is a program for talented students with a passion for the humanities or social sciences who are from underrepresented minority groups and/or from socioeconomic backgrounds that have also typically been underrepresented in academia."

All costs associated with the program are paid (room & board, round-trip to Williams, books) and students receive a $100 stipend for the month of July. The program goes from June 26-July 30. In lieu of summer earnings, $900 tution abatement! That is insane. I am seriously amazed at Williams generousity and committment to ensuring that finances are not a worry for students.

Participants in the program take courses in social psychology, philosophy, political science, and comparative literature. There's much more (yes, the letter was a full two pages), but I'll keep this brief.

Apparently, space is limited to 16 students, and because more want to than can attend the program, they have a lottery. I would absolutely LOVE to attend this program... Has anyone else received this letter or one similar? I think there is a similar science program.

Well, the program sounds awesome and I really hope I can go. The only problem is I need to find out A.S.A.P. because I have other commitments. Well, let me know if any of you were invited!

i was too. i was half thrilled but half weirded out. i'm feeling like i'm being rushed into signing up for williams, and i don't want to go there just for that program, lol.

Oh I can see where you're coming from. I applied ED, so this has nothing to do with my decision to go to Williams. It was just an extra (super awesome) bonus for me.

So do you think you'll send in the post card to go or not?

i have no idea. am i allowed to send it in now even tho i've no idea if i will end up attending williams (the program does sound amazing)? if not, then i'll have to wait until 4/23 (after dartmouth dimensions) b/c right now i'm still choosing btwn dartmouth and williams. it'll be awesome if we both end up going, tho, lol.

I got one too. I don't know if I am going to say yes though because I have a conflict. sounds soo cool though..its too bad. Is it really limited to 16 people?

Wow, i got one today in the mail too. I think I want to do it. Sounds very cool, but how do they actually choose the applicants if they have quite a few? anyways, anyone NOT get it?

If you can go, do it. Williamstown in the summer is the best.

I called Professor Newman and talked to her for a bit about the program. She said typically double want to go than can go. So to choose who gets to go they simply hold a lottery. No one has a better chance than anyone, because we are supposedly all equally qualified.

So basically we have a 50/50 chance of getting to go, that is supposing the same amount of people send in the postcard as usual.

By the way, she also said that thye were considering offering the program to 18 students. That would be tops though, because they want to keep the group intimate and intensive.

Gosh, I want to go so badly! But I really need to find out soon. And if I do get to go, I will feel really bad telling my band instructor that I will be missing much of our Marching band season.

I got an invite as well... :) I'm so excited about it. I know you can't go unless you are definitely going to Williams in the fall though. I'm praying I'll get to go. :P

Does anyone know about the SSP (Summer Science Program) because I saw it somewhere on the prospectus. By the way, are these programs open to int'l students? Thanks!

I'm not sure how they apply to internationals. They aren't open to everyone, though. You have to be of a minority group or a socioeconomically underrepresented group....

I got this too.. but I'm worried because I'm not really a socieoeconomics/racial/religous minority. Stange?

kind of...
