My S and his gf want to do "something together" this summer (?!). Maybe take a course, work a fun job or do an internship - both are super bright kids that could handle classes anywhere but they want to be near a beach (I know, I know - but we were young once too!) Something fun, productive and not too expensive, a tall order. He can do anything with computers/software and she is pre-med w/ EMT certification and hospital experience. Any thoughts? We will spring for tuition IF their respective schools will accept the credits (UPenn and Brown).

If they can afford it, they should intern somewhere and maybe get an apartment together (not sure how you feel about that…) for the summer? That way they don’t have to intern together, which is good as I don’t see where they would combine their two skills, but they can see each other every day and the excitment of being in a new city on their own will make for a fun summer.

If they’re interested, I reccommend they look for something in the DC area, DC is a really fun place to be as a summer intern. There’s a lot of stuff going on: summer softball and kickball leagues, outdoor movies every Monday night on the Mall in front of the capitol (free!), jazz concerts in the sculpture garden (also free), walking through the Monuments on warm summer nights, just to name a few of my favorites. Plus there are tons of other college-age people around, with lots of happy hour meet ups and other intern get-togethers.

Great idea, except that is home for us!

Yeah, I didn’t see that you lived in Maryland until after I’ve posted.

Well, if they want something REALLY different, have they considered Seattle? Huge tech community where he could intern, and great medical community for her. Beautiful surroundings, they can kayak and hike and take the ferry to the islands in the Puget Sound, tour Pike Place market, enjoy the music scene. It would really work best if they had a car though (you can take the bus in Seattle, the bus system is really nice, but there’s no metro), which could be a bonus - cross country road trip to a summer internship on the coast. California would work too.

That sounds very interesting - I’ll pass it along! Thanks!
