Does anyone know of a summer program anywhere in Europe that is either:
1. study-based and is funded by scholarship/travel grant, or
2. employment-based and comes with lodging/stipend?
My sophomore daughter desperately wants to go overseas this summer, but we don't have the resources to send her. She's a smart cookie and capable of putting together a good application, if needed.

What do kids do who want to go overseas with minimal financial outlay?

The possibilities are there, you probably just haven’t found them.

I never had the money to “study abroad” a la US university or study abroad company programs, so I went independently.

Where does your daughter want to study? If she’s interested in language and culture, such as Learn Spanish + Spanish Culture Classes, or Italian, or French, German, etc., there are lots of possibilities.

I did this several times. I searched for affordable study abroad options – and I found them.
I spent two summers in Italy, some time in France, about 6 months in Germany.

To give you an idea of the costs I found:

In Italy you can study for 470 euros a month for tution (as many months as you want) + around 250 euros for housing in a student apartment.

I did a program in Germany which costs around 800 euros for 3 months (that’s the tuition) and I stayed in a reasonably priced German student dorm.

If you’re interested, post more questions – I’ll post more answers!
