Summer in Japan

My S (a high school sophomore) has expressed interest in doing a 3-4 week intensive language study program in Japan. Does anyone have experience with any programs for high school students you would recommend?

Our friends' son participated in a program we know we'd like to avoid; the family to which he was assigned for the homestay aspect more or less kicked him out midway into the program and the program officials were extremely unhelpful in finding him more suitable hosts. Their son was 17 and pretty sophisticated in his ability to deal with the situation; my son will be 16 by the summer (currently a sophomore) and is very naive to the ways of the world. S is a strong Japanese student who is seeking a very serious academic component to any program he attends; after our friends' son's disastrous experience, I want to make sure I pay as much attention to the supervision and safety aspects of the program as the academic ones.

I know Temple University has, or had , a campus in Japan. I knew someone who taught there once. Temple University, Philadelphia, is really a very good college. It has many professional schools (law, medicine, dental, etc.) It is in a unique position that it receives both state and private funding.I can tell you the profs work very hard to help their students achieve their goals.

You know, if your son has great stats Temple may take him for college courses there. Not only did they take my son as a high school senior college freshman but also gave him a scholarship. You may be impressed by their helpfulness.

You might want to consult the American School in Japan - ASIJ. I think they have a web site.
