Summer Intensive: Latin (Rush/Mann)

Does anyone know how difficult this is? Or how the professor E. Rush or K.L. Mann is?

Thanks!

Seeing as how Latin is a dead language, is there really any purpose in learning that? Spanish would at least be better since there’s a lot of spanish speaking people in southern california. It’d look way better than latin.

Unless you just love latin.

Latin is a great language (this is coming from a Latin minor from Cal). Latin would be exceedingly useful when learning other Romance languages. Also, it is rather useful in biology courses, especially when you are trying to memorize genus and species names.

That’s probably true, but wouldn’t it be better to devote that time you devote to Latin onto another language, instead of learning Latin and then learning the other language? I guess it’d be better to learn Latin if you are going to tackle every romance language, but even learning it to help you memorize genus and species names seems like it’d be better to just learn them straight out instead.

Some lawyers need to learn Latin, or so I’ve heard. Also, if you are interested in history it is very important. Even if you intend to learn two or three Romance languages, knowing Latin will help, because it will give you a much firmer understanding of Romance languages. For example, I knew French before I learned Latin. If you know any French, you would know that it many cases the gender of a word is just random, and you don’t really know why. If you know the Latin root you will be able to figure out the reasoning of the gender, as gender was generally preserved through time.
