Summer intern housing at George Mason.

What is the area around the Fairfax campus like? Safety? Things to do? Restaurants & groceries nearby?

There’s lots to do. If you have a George Mason id you can catch the shuttle that stops at many places. You can also take it to connect to Metro which can take you to DC. There is a movie theater, grocery store, places to eat just across the street. You’ll find lots of places to discover in the area. The courthouse is nearby so there are a lot of law offices in the area. There is security on campus but it’s in the suburbs not in the city. There are lots of places to eat right on campus.

Thanks @raclut. It’s definitely a cheaper summer housing option than other schools in the district. I looked at Marymount this summer, but didn’t think it was in a very appealing location.

Is your internship at GMU? If so it helps to live close to campus if possible.

@raclut it’s my son’s internship in N. Virginia, about a 25 minute drive from GMU - no good public transportation. Living in DC would be closer, but more expensive.

What area is this internship? I’m assuming it is not affiliated with GMU. If you are saying living in DC would be closer but more expensive he could live anywhere off the metro line that would be cheaper than DC.

@raclut. The internship is for a company in McLean, there is not good public transportation in the immediate area and he will need a car at work anyway. Staying in intern dorm housing at an area university (that has parking available) seems to be the best option. GMU seems to be the most cost effective option, unless there is another university further north of McLean that offers summer housing at a reasonable price.

If the job is in Mclean then I would not recommend living near GMU because the traffic to Mclean/Tysons would be horrible in the morning. Everyone is heading towards DC. I would suggest finding a place to live in Mclean itself. There are four metro stops in Mclean and lots of apartments and condo’s in the area. I am sure someone is probably looking for a roommate to share housing costs. Living near any of the metro stops closer to Mclean would be best. It is very common to commute by metro or bus over here. Lots of young people also like to live in the Arlington area.
