summer internship question?

My friend is starting grad school in the fall and asked me to post this question here since many of you are more experienced with the working world than we are. She applied to a few summer internships which she recently gave up on and began to prepare to start grad school early, in the summer. Last Friday she received an email from a place that she's very interested in working at-- that basically said the following:

"Hello, I am the group leader for Z group at Y company. I have a summer intern position X here which involves A, B, and C. It's a great job, very important etc bc of D, E, F. If you are interested in this position, please email me back."

She emailed them back yesterday morning citing her interest, and has gotten no response so far. She really needs to figure out if she actually has been OFFERED this job so she can inform her graduate school to change her start date to normal instead of early. The person left an email, cell phone, and work phone. Is there anything she can do? Is this an offer? When should she call that person, and what should she say? She would like to (1) get this job and (2) finalize it asap so she can make further plans.

Unfortunately an offer for a summer internship is not always automatic. There is usually an interview process and then some waiting before an offer is made. If she calls the group leader an explains her situation she may be able to find out more information regarding her chances of getting the internship.

The manager may have sent that email to several people, so nothing is guaranteed. There should be nothing wrong with calling that manager and saying “I am very interested in this position if it is still available. Regardless I would need to know so soon, as I do have alternate summer plans that I would need to address.”

Call, don’t email.
