I'm going to be graduating high school this year. I would like to do something involved with the arts for the summer, but am not sure I want to do the whole "pre-college program" thing (sort of feel like that is more for current high schoolers). I live near NYC, but not in it. Does anyone know of any internships or programs, or whatever, that I'd be able to do? Or how to find them? This seems like a long shot but its worth a try I suppose.

hey wagdog! congrats I hear you made it in somewhere nice, no?
the Met does payed summer, but maybe you are right, residents only.

it is quite selective and fussy, like they’d expect you to show up on interview on school day during class.
MoMA does that too but apps are not in or maybe no more.
did you check ICP? as a rule, museums wants kids who did “time” there -took classes before and such for intern, maybe you have shot there?
good luck

Look for volunteer opportunities in festivals or public events. For theater interests, I know the Fringe Festival is going on in August and they count on lots of volunteers to make that happen. Check out idealist or one of the volunteer match sites or the parks dept for art programs.
Most of the big museums require city residency for the internship programs.

Okay, so this may be too far for you --would have to live here for summer, but The Smithsonian Institute (includes all the DC museums) has lots of teen interns during the summer. I think the applications are due Feb. 1, so you would have to act quickly. Not sure if there’s any housing available for out-of-staters. Something to look into though.
