saeraxD, does your dad work at Argonne? I know that plenty of high school students intern at Argonne. Finding an unpaid research internship isn't that hard in high school - just show interest and start emailing like crazy!

I was wondering if anyone was interning in Washington this summer and if so, where are you living? Dorms? Guest house?

I'm not interning for the Feds this summer, but I'm interested in the summer of 2007, what I want to know is what are the req. creditintals? Will a 3.5 cut it from a regular state school with some leaderships and a couple honors? I'm interested in working with either the SEC, FDIC, or OPIC and was wondering what the competition is like

Is there a reason to do an unpaid internship?

sdexp, experience. Why else would you do an internship?

Just Curious, Penn15, why do you address yourself as a "first year" instead of "freshman"? It's a tradition in my school (UVa) to call people by years instead of fr/so/jr/sr, and I never knew Penn kids do that too.

i'm a first year too. i'm interning for one of the oldest private assets management banks in switzerland this summer, following by some interning at Swiss Bankers Association. Both internships will be relatively short. After that, I want to intern at some place in the States or China.

i hate u all! ok fine, i guess a better word is envy lol

how the heck am i going to find an internship this summer with a high school diploma? i want to study finance/business but after searching online/making calls, i'm still getting nowhere and i don't have any connections

ANY SUGGESTIONS!?? any of you sucessful folks get some hints/advice for a 17 trying to get experience in finance.

it's hard as s*** to get a finance internship for a high school graduate without connection, seriously. I'm glad you started early man, that shows you are motivated.

untilted. then what kind of job should i look for as an alternative since i dont have any connections? lol

ok, if you are strictly asking a random firm for a finance job, there;s little chance. most high schoolers have never taken micro/macro/financial accounting nor any kind of corporate finance classes. If you really want a finance internship, YOU MUST have a Mentor.... but few firms would provide a free Mentor to a person whom they know nothing about. So, if you really don't have connection and want internships, you should be looking for an "corporate atmosphere/cubical experience" in the internship at this early stage, rather than real finance skills......... several of my friends had connections (their relatives are heads of accounting departments of some firms), so they got mentors and started out early. a lot of other people didnt necessarily go in the field of their career interests. you first internship can be anything. even if you are interested in let's say engineering, you can still do an internship for a marketing department of a firm as a graphic desigh techie. (if you are good at computers.)
just go with your interest.

thanks untitled

I am (shouts with glee)! Well, my friend whose a senior had a mentor at UMCP Biotech Research Center for her research project. She gave me the website and email address. So I emailed him, telling him I was interested in doing science research this summer. Emailed me two days later, asking for resume and cover letter. So I sent it and he emailed back saying he has open spaces and that I should call in when I want to start. So I guess it was connections + initiative that got me it..."

^^In response to that post...if you still have her mentor's e-mail address (I know your post is from one year ago, lol), do you mind giving it to me? I have applied to several research programs and internships this year, but want to make my chances bigger. I want to apply to as many as possible, since I'm a junior in high school.

Thanks so much! Hope to hear from you soon.

can you guys advise me on internships. I want to do something in the business field when I get into college. I dont know where I should find an internship. Banks? I am only in high school. if anyone would give me some suggestions on where to look in to please reply.

I wonder if guys like you ever realize the chances you are taking away from others. No wonder you are stuck in cycles of envy...

If any of you guys live in SoCal, there's a program called the ROP. For example, if you sign up for the Culinary Arts Intern class, it gives you people the basics of cooking, etc. Then you get permission for free interns at big hotels and restauratns. Pretty chill.

I know this is a few months after the fact, but we refer to years at UCSD as well. It has to do with class year - fr/so/jr/sr - being dictated by number of units, so it's much more convenient to refer to students by year.

:)

Hi all, I'm currently a senior in high school but will enter UC Berkeley as a freshman. I intern at a local newspaper and started in August. I mainly did it for my senior project and am looking forward to quitting.

HOWEVER, now I'm reading all these threads and looking good for jobs etc etc and am wary of quitting.

You see, I'm interested in journalism but am still not 100% sure that I want to enter the field. I plan on going to grad school of journalism since I'm going to prob. pursue history as an undergrad.

The question is, should I still keep this internship? I mean...I'm obviously going to leave for college so it's impossible for me to keep the internship but for the summer, should I?

I don't know if it's worth it because I absoutely hate it. I don't get paid (it really doesnt bother me too much but will if I plan on doing it during the summer). Is it too early to have an internship? Gah, help, thanks!

Referring to years rules.

does anybody know any business/finance related internship posititons?

You have to contact them directly for it. There really aren't any formal business/finance related internship programs.
