I’m trying to guide my high school senior on finding a summer job that will not only earn some money but also help him career wise. He will major in business in college.
He has worked in a fast food chain for a year. For high schoolers here (DFW TX area), most popular jobs are fast food, clothing store associate, camp leader (for small kids).
I wonder if there are other opportunities that will actually carry some ‘weight’ in his future resume when he seeks college intern and job?
He can volunteer in some area of interest. TBH, that might be a useful thing to add to his resume. Colleges aren’t terribly interested in what kids do before college, but if he wants to add weight to his resume and can’t find a paid job more substantial than what he is already doing, volunteering is just as notable.
Do you have any friends with businesses that would take on an intern? Sometimes word of mouth is what it takes. The summer after HS DD’19 worked for the Chamber of Commerce, because I had stopped in their office for work purposes and got into conversation about our kids. I never saw them advertise the position.
Check Indeed or Facebook Jobs? I checked Americorps for Dallas-Fort Worth but didn’t find any that were summer only.
My nephew in Junior year summer, started a kind of local Craig’s list for odd jobs. He and younger brother recruited friends to do what they couldn’t handle or were already booked. They offered tutoring, garage and basement clean ups, babysitting, yard work, and pet sitting. By the end of the summer, they had 8 other kids consistently working for them part time. When older one went off to college, younger one took over. Both are now in college. They made some money, learned new skills, and had interesting experiences. They sold the business for a few thousand dollars to another rising junior. As far as I know, that kid is still doing it.
Anything is good at this point. Colleges like working kids at anything. He might try to reach out to his local government officials but they would most likely want free work interns but it’s worth the email to find out.
