Summer Job for Caltech Admit?

I will be attending Caltech next semester, and I've got a long summer ahead of me (until september 18th!). I was wondering if it would be a good idea to call Caltech career services and see if they might help me find an internship for the summer, but there's an issue with that idea; I currently live in Oklahoma City so they might not be able to do anything for me. Then again who knows, the long arm of Caltech connections might extend to here...

Is it a good idea to seek an internship before entering college? I'd like to get an internship with the oil and gas industry (I want to be a ChemE major and it's a big industry in Oklahoma) if at all possible. I have a friend who personally knows a recruiter for Devon Energy and he made it very clear that they only recruit interns from certain universities and they interview in September -- so it would be impossible for him to offer me anything.

Can anyone offer me some advice? I'm somewhat new to Oklahoma and I fear that I'll be doing absolutely nothing over the long summer.

I don’t think Caltech career services would be able to help a prefrosh especially this late.

Also, unless job description specifically mentions it or you have really good connections it is almost impossible to get a good internship as a high school student. I applied to something like 20 internships for last summer and didn’t even get a response.

I suggest trying to do some research with a professor at a local university.

I’ve already been doing research the past two years (part of the reason I got into Caltech). My parents expect me to work during the summer and I’d rather do something that would be relevant to my studies…

I know it’s late, but I didn’t know where I was going to go to school until a couple weeks ago (when I decided on Caltech) so I had no idea about my summer plans. Are there any other options?

Get a job at a local supermarket?
