Is getting a job during summer that important? For me, I would rather volunteer instead of getting a job, but is that a good idea?

Sorry, I'm guess this kind of thread had already out there several time. But thanks for your patience!

Yes, working some type of structured job is important. If you can find volunteer work that is scheduled and reputable, then that's just like a job(but not paid) but personally, I don't think DIY type volunteering is worth as much. When you do need a REAL job, you'll want some references.

... I'm also an advocate for a job ALL year, not just the summer.

If you have a choice of volunteer work, or real work, I would take the real work. You get paid for doing work. You are helping people also. Plus, who is going to pay for all the gas money and stuff?

I'm in the same boat. I decided I'm gonna get a job but work minimally as possible just to keep it. I'm volunteering 4 days a week, 8 hours a day instead. Volunteering looks better than a job if you do it at the right place. But, if you can hold a job on top of volunteering, it looks even better.

How do you make volunteer work "count" on applications?

Jobs make money. College costs money.

I specifically said VOLUNTEER work.

volunteer

adj : without payment; "the soup kitchen was run primarily by unpaid helpers"; "a volunteer fire department" [syn: unpaid, volunteer(a)]

One approach to making volunteer work "count":

-find something that is significant and that you are very if not intensely interested in;

-spend enough time to learn the field and to get whatever responsibility and experience can be made available for people your age;

-reflect on your experiences as a volunteer so that you can determine who can write you a knowledgeable, positive, and believeable recommendation that will help distinguish you; and/or

-reflect on your experiences so you can write one or more knowledgeable, believeable and otherwise terrific essays inspired by your experience as a volunteer.

I see, so I guess getting job is pretty important. I'm little scared of the idea of getting a job for me since I've never gotten one, and I don't know, but don't you get ****ed off when someone who's not so English was working with you?
