Summer job lined up?

With unemployment at nearly 25% for young adults/teens,does your college student have a summer job lined up ?... Is it something in their field of study,or just a summer job to make some money...how is the pay?

I am really pleased to report that my daughter just received a theater production internship for the Summer. It does not pay well (minimum wage), but that is better than an unpaid internship. Hours will vary between 20 and 40 hours.

She is excited to get an internship in her field of study, but recognizes that it will not pay the bills. She is also returning to her faithful old summer job, lifeguarding and teaching swimming. Pretty good money ($15-$20 per hour), but she might have gone nuts if that was her entire Summer. So, a good mix of satisfying and well-paying work.

D is interviewing for summer internships. She has some things lined up in her home town, but she would much prefer to live and work elsewhere.

Congrats to your D, ALF. My D did lifeguarding/taught swim team one summer and said that some parents were willing to pay up to $50 per hour for private swim technique lessons (posh Estside area). Your D should explore that money-making opportunity. The interest in private swim lessons up goes up the closer we get to the next Summer Olympics. :)

Yes,swim lessons pay well, we give our lifeguard 20 bucks for 45 minutes for our youngest D…our college student landed a FT summer job in her field of study at 13 bucks per hour…very happy for her, though have asked her to find a few hours in her PT,minimum wage job,so as to help keep the job for when she is home on breaks during school year…she’s not loving that advice. ;)

Yes, son got an IT internship in his field with a Fortune top 10 company, $3800/month. We just realized that maybe this company low balls on the pay because some of the other major tech firms pay 6K plus. But I’m sure he’s thrilled to do some real work, and any money is just an added bonus.

DD a rising junior, EECS major, had multiple options in her field of study and chose a top company for summer internship.
It’s a structured program for 12 weeks that will pay her $18200. She is excited about the opportunity and wanted to explorer it as a long term career goal too.

We decided for my youngest that it made more sense to do an immersion experience in Arabic. It looks like he may be able to do some volunteer work on the side while he’s overseas. Paid work will have to wait.

Older son son is graduating and has a job. He’s worked every summer.
