Summer Job Vs. Summer Volunteering

IF you could only pick one, which one would look better on a college app?

In my case I could get a summer job working at a local retirement home or volunteer at a research lab at a Division 1 University alongside qualified researchers.

I’m thinking about majoring in some science area…

if your field is science, then i would definitely go for the research because it has more relevance to your field than working at a retirement home. you gain skills in your field + great place to get recs from people in your actual field.

of course if you really needed the money, then i'd go for the work.

i also recommend the research
what kind of volunteering would u do???

don't do it for apps, do it for you

The research opportunity certainly sounds more interesting, even not thinking about college apps. If things work out, it's possible that the prof(s) might be an extra reference, too. Perhaps you can combine the research volunteer activity with a part-time job.

Some labs also hire paid summer assistants.
