I was wondering, how do some kids find summer jobs? I try to check online but no one is hiring inexperienced teens. So do I go up to a place like Target, or some local boba tea store to ask them if they're hiring? So if you guys can help me out here..... :)

I’ve been trying to find a part-time job for almost a year, with no luck. I’ve tried Craigslist which was the only way I got any responses (both jobs that wanted to interview me were too far away, though). It’s really easy to apply, you just quick a link and you can email them your resume, and you know if they post they’re really hiring. The problem is big chains that hire a lot of teens don’t usually post there. So I’ve pretty much been reduced to wandering around the mall, filling out applications at every place that will let me. You might as well apply to Starbucks online, because you can apply to every store in your area with just one application. But it’s really hard to get a job there, because everyone who needs a part-time job wants to work there because it pays well, the benefits are really good and it’s more fun to make lattes than flip burgers.

I think the best way to look for a job is through any connections. Start by asking all your friends who have jobs if their workplaces are hiring. Then ask anyone else you can think of if they know of anything.

Looking for a job kills your self-esteem, btw. It really sucks to think that you’re such a smart, hardworking person and you can’t even find a job at McDonald’s when high school dropouts are working as assistant managers. But good luck.

Well I really need a job because both my parents are unemployed. Also it would look good on my college app. Do you think I can get a job working at the pharmacy? Not at target and McDonald but a real job that relates to my future career. Cuz I heard they only want adults.

I’m pretty sure pharm careers require degrees (almost certainly positive, in fact), and they’re sure not going to hire a teenager. If you don’t have any connections (family/friends in whatever you would like, or who know of secretarial positions), you will probably be applying for entry-level part time retail positions. You might also look around for summer counselor gigs, as those are seasonal when you need them to be.

Apply at all the restaurants and retail stores around you. You fill out an application and they call you back if they want you.
Some places, mostly stores, won’t hire you under 18, so make sure you ask first.

Unfortunately, if you’re under eighteen and inexperienced, mostly restaurants, fast food places, or retail stores will hire you. You could try ice cream places or movie theaters or basically anywhere you can think of where they’ll especially need summer help. And don’t be afraid to ask around at your school where others will work or have worked in the past.

I worked at an amusement park for the past two summers in food service, and it definitely sucked, but at least now I have job experience and am no longer a minor. You just gotta start somewhere and then use your experience to get a better job. Good luck!

It may not be an option, but if you have any connections that is your best bet. I am currently being considered for a paid internship and part time summer job because of connections. If you belong to a church or synagogue or some other places of prayer check with them because they like often like to hire from within and will overlook the age thing. You could probably also get a job at a summer camp, but of course that is seasonal.
