Does anyone have a summer job? If so, how and where did you get yours? I'm getting desperate. I've tried snagajob.com and replied to a bunch of Craigslist ads, but none of them ever replied back.

Yup. I work in a veterinary hospital as a veterinary intern; I learn and do the dirty/busy work.

To get this position, I simply called the hospital. This is my second year working there so they knew me pretty well. Don’t let my story fool you lol, when I applied for this a year ago, I tried five other places and the current place I’m working at was the only clinic that gave me valid information, was nice about it, and gave dates and times when their intern coordinator was available. Besides their hospitality, their service was also the reason why I choose to work there again.

Walmart is hiring in our town… my D is a night stocker (10 pm - 7 am shift) this summer. Although she is 18 (not sure if they will hire younger or not).

I work at the local public golf course (technically I am a paid intern). I coach, work the pro-shop and do random other things. I got the job because I had been volunteering as a coach for several year. At this point it is a bit late to find a true summer job (camp counselor or something else that clearly ends when the summer ends), that being said retail would be your best bet.

I work at McDonald’s, but I work there during the year too.

Have you tried walking into stores and asking for an application?

I work at a daycare, I started off babysitting.

Walmart hired me in May (I’m mercifully close to quitting b/c of college), but I’m 18. The minor job market is bleak.

rickdust, my D is feeling the same about Walmart.

After first night -

Me: How was it?
D: Okay.

After second night -

Me: How was it?
D: I’m glad I’m going to college in the fall…

I have a crazy story how I got offered a paid job at the Wall Street Journal at age 16. Then after the offer got rejected for being under 18.

In August saw the CEO’s ad in the Journal as a daily reader, asking customers to email him personally with any issues. (Now that is customer service!) I emailed him and said how much I love his paper. ( I don’t but I wanted a free copy.) He emailed me with thanks and offered the internship.

The next month I was contacted by HR in NY and interviewed over the phone. Then, things just got quiet.

In May, I wrote to the CEO with copies of our emails, kindly asking for an internship, reminding him how great he was. I got transferred over to the S.F. office. I went in once for an interview, the guy who interviewed me was VP of Sales for North America, and he loved me. I was also given a test of an SEC filing of a company, and told to find errors. I devoured that test.

I was offered the job two days later. The salary, at age 17, I won’t state, but I will say it was more than $11/hr.

Then, HR and NY told me that they couldn’t take me, for I was under 18.

Guess I’ll have to try again next year…

Yeah. I work at a shaved ice/frozen yogurt place. Minimum wage. I got this job because the owner graduated from my high school not too long ago, so he likes to hire kids from his alma mater.

intparent- applaud her resilience for not quitting. It is incredibly depressing working there, I’m not exaggerating. The customers are the bottom rung of society and the full-time employees are very sad to watch. No one dreams of being 34 and having an hourly Walmart job. Ugh. It wouldn’t be as bad if more employees had actual futures, you know? It just sucks to watch

You can do essay writing for business and school needs though. Or try apply being an attendant in a net cafe.

My son is 16 and he works at Panera Bread. He has not gotten a lot of hours yet, but he likes it and hopes to keep working during school and in college.
