summer journalism program vs. leadership position

I got into a pretty amazing journalism program at Northwestern- 5 weeks through their journalism school this summer. Journalism has been my biggest thing throughout high school-- I co founded the school paper after it was cancelled as a class my freshman year and I'm currently co editor in chief as a Junior. I'm heavily considering a major in journalism. I'm fairly sure I'll be able to attend the program.

However, if I go, I won't be able to be on executive board for student government, something I've been involved in my entire high school career, although it's not as important to me as journalism. In order to be on the board you have to attend camp which falls during the journalism program. Also, I'm on the golf team and I probably won't be able to be a golf captain because I will be gone for so long.

Would a program like this make up for a lack of leadership positions? Do you think it would be worth it?

I think you should follow your passion- which sounds like journalism. FYI- The program will not make you a shoein for a top notch journalism school (but neither will the extra curriculas) but you will learn more about your potential craft which may open doors in so many ways.

This can be said about the other 2 opportunities as well. So truthfull do the one you truly want to do verses doing the one which you think will make your application read better.

I think the Golf & leadership opportunities, student govt sound awesome too- but don’t count on them helping you for admission either. That’s why you must be authentic to yourself.

This is the time you want to learn about yourself – not groom your application. Lets say your stay for Golf but don’t get selected for captain will you be ticked you missed out on the journalism?

When all your friends brag about how much fun they had at the camp but you missed it b/c of journalism & then don’t get into the college journalism program will you regret the sacrifice.

You have good choices - make a list of pros & cons and go with it.

Hi, I’m actually going to the same program as you! ahaha

Anyway, this is my biased opinion: I think it’s more important to go to cherubs than to stay for the student government thing. If you think that journalism is something that you think you will continue on for years to come, then go. My friend went: she was EIC of our school newspaper and she actually now goes to Northwestern! She told me that it was worth the time and money and that you will learn SO much about journalism there.

I also had to turn down some yearbook camp stuff for cherubs. It was a bit of tough decision, especially since I had to turn down yearbook EIC for my newspaper EIC, but I think attending cherubs will definitely be worth it in the end.

Also, as for the golf team, maybe try talking to your coach now and tell him/her that you really want to be golf captain and though you will be gone for a good amount of the summer, you are still committed to the team. Besides, I think usually sports teams that play in the fall practice more so in August than July, so you should be fine.

The decision is up to you. Follow your heart. Hope this helps!

also I recommend going to the medill cherubs website-they have a lot videos and articles about what the program is like! I think it’ll help with your decision.
