There is a program called the "Summer Medical and Dental Education Program" that is offered at various schools such as UVA, Yale, Columbia, etc. Does anyone know how difficult it is to get into one of these programs and has anyone done this program before?

D1 attended SMDEP at UWashington the summer after her fr year. She had a great time and it was the final experience that made her sure that she wanted to go into medicine. The courses weren’t terribly challenging, and some of the touchy feely exercises were not to her liking, but the experience with her mentor was excellent and she made some good friends. She also got a better feel for what it means to apply and attend med school (at least at UW) through various lectures and presentations.

I’ve never seen the actual numbers published anywhere, but since it’s a scholarship based program at some of the top Med schools in the country, I suspect that it’s highly selective.

Any recommendations for summer pre-dental programs, other than smdep, which seems to target underprivileged and disadvantaged students, for a college freshman entering his sophomore year in the fall?

@cooper,
My recommendation is to use sites that have aggregated summer programs on a web page, for example:

[Summer Research Opportunities](http://mcb.berkeley.edu/undergrad/research/research/summer-research/)
or
MD-PhD.org

and find the ones that interest you. Do this in the fall while you work on a PS. Later in the fall into Jan. you fill out the apps. send your LORs and transcripts and hope you get in. There are some great programs being offered. The summer after my freshman year I did research at a major cancer center which resulted in a published paper and this coming summer I’ve so far been accepted to 4 programs.
But you need to apply early and to many programs.

What you are looking for but after junior year. Save it for then.

Requirements:

Thanks for the quick replies. I will forward to my son. At first glance, these sites appear to be for premed not pre dental students.

The UNC program takes 30 pre-dental students per summer.
