While I don’t have knowledge specific to composers, I would say that it is common for instrumentalists to apply to multiple festivals. Not only to improve the chance of being accepted to a program, but also to be able to weigh the financials. Some programs are of course more expensive than others and similar to the college application process, students can apply for merit scholarship and financial aid.
Most are competitive. I would pay attention to who is teaching, because aesthetic styles vary quite a bit. Also these programs offer an opportunity to meet professors of grad schools that might be of interest in the future- as well as peer composers and peer and/or professional musicians. There are some programs in Europe that during normal times, might be worth looking at.
My daughter is at live auditions for Miami Music Festival with a couple of friends today!
Found a link here for festivals that include college age (also mostly symphonic): Orchestral Festivals — Erik Shinn.
NYO2 just sent out decisions for summer 2022.
D23 is an alternate flute, but given that there are only three flute spots on the main roster - we will continue planning her summer.
Congratulations to all NYO and NYO2 kiddos selected for this summer!
Frustrating for those instruments with only a few spots, but I would imagine making alternate is still a very BIG deal! Congratulations! Hope she finds another great summer option!
Thank you! She is used to this, part of the “flute life”, I guess!
Now wait continues for Brevard and Tanglewood decisions!
COngrats!!! It is so exciting to be considered right! And flute life is right! My S is waiting on Greenwood and Kinhaven, 2-3 flutes each. He will try for NYO next year (still only 15 and we were late to look at it), I don’t understand NYO2, do they consider you if you are not from a community under-represented in music?
My college aged D is waiting on Brevard and a few others as well. Crossing my fingers for both of them!!!
She was nominated by her band teacher in school. It is a public high school with 85% of minority students in the student body. School is new and music program is growing very rapidly, we are so excited they are considering adding the Mariachi Band club and class! Almost half of students are Hispanic.
I think you can be nominated until you turn 17 at the time of the program.

That is amazing! I don’t think that my S from a NYC suburb in NJ would qualify, ha! Congrats to her though, so exciting and I would not discount the waiting list for these programs. I would not be surprised if some kids decide on another option or decide that they aren’t comfortable with such a long time away from home.
NYO/NYO2 are fantastic programs- congrats, RussianMom! My D (cellist) is joining NYO for 2nd year this summer and I have a viola student who is an alternate for NYO2. I love that NYO2 emphasizes recruiting underrepresented minorities, but I would encourage all to apply as NYO2 historically has a mix of students from all backgrounds/ethnicities, and the 3 or 4 from our local youth orchestra who have participated in previous years are not all underrepresented minorities.
@violincellomom that fantastic for your daughter! Congratulations! what part of the country do you live in?
Anyone have any intel on Tanglewood string quartet workshop? We are familiar with orchestra program but wondering about playing level for quartet program. Or any other recs for shorter (2-3 week) programs for strings.
@Cloudybay23, I am now perusing Tanglewood program catalog, D23 is accepted to two BUTI programs and waitlisted for one, I am trying to understand the difference between those, specifically the YA Wind Ensemble and YA Orchestra. Seems same faculty is involved on instrument side.
Our school year starts on August 3rd in GA, so it is a tough call to miss a week of school to attend a summer program…
Congrats to her! So exciting to have choices!! My S’s teacher said that the flute intensive was not worthwhile but both of the other two programs were outstanding!
I think generally orchestra is more competitive to get into than wind ensemble. Basically one is full orchestra the other just winds. (more limited repertoire). which program was she waitlisted for?
@helpingthekid73 assume you have no info on string quartet workshop?
no, my S is a flutist like @RussianMom’s D. I think getting into wind ensemble is amazing. With wind instruments any orchestra is a huge accomplishment since they only take 2 of each instrument (sometimes just one) as apposed to 16-40 strings.
@Cloudybay23 She got into BUTI Flute Intensive and Young Artist Orchestra, but waitlisted for Wind Ensemble, which was her second choice after Orchestra.
Sorry, clueless about BUTI String Quartet program, but my daughter always enjoyed the chamber part of her summer festivals the most, including playing with strings, other woodwinds, and her sweet harp friends.
Is your kid considering BUTI? How exciting!
