I'm currently entering college as an undecided major, and it seems like the summer is the perfect time for me to find out if I truly love music. Because my parents will contribute very little (at most $1000 including air fare expenses), I'm looking for a way I can experience music at little-none cost. If I do decide to major in music, I'm looking into composition and conducting. Over the summer, I want to do something related to those fields.

I looked into university summer courses, but I couldn't find one which offers scholarships (I probably won't qualify for financial aid). Anyone know of any universities which do?

Also, anyone know of any summer music opportunities that are no cost (or even paid)?

Now, here’s the bad news. Without knowing you level, instrument, years of training those on this list are for the most part extremely competitive, and are geared to conservatory level undergrads, grad students, and degree or certificate holding emerging professional and pre professional musicians.

The second part of the bad news is that most app and audition deadlines are past, although there are a few with late deadlines.

The third part of the bad news is that I don’t think there’s one on that list for entry level comp or conducting (most conducting studies are at the grad level and beyond, not undergrad).

My experience is in strings, chamber music and orchestral performance, not conducting or comp study opportunities. There have been a few threads detailing some options, but again it’s late for apps, and the programs where you might get in at this juncture may entail signnificant out of pocket expense. Have you checked within your geographic region?

Edit: I added links, but they are not in the intended order. First time I’ve seen this happen. Any techies know what this is “xxxx (mwl - 2.19.2009) –>” ? It’s not in any of the text I copied or typed.

Thanks for the links violadad. I know this will be very rare, but I had internships that involved composing/analyzing music in mind. Nevertheless, I’m basically looking for music theory, musicianship and music analyzing courses/experiences.

I don’t think that competition will be an obstacle though, as it never hurts to apply!
