Hi everyone! I’m a sophomore in high and I will be auditioning for Hartt’s musical theatre intesive summer program. I would like to know if anyone else is attending or has attended the program and can tell me something about it (although I don’t realy know how long it has been around for, but oh well).

I did the summer intensive program the summer before when I went to ninth grade. I really enjoyed it and got the chance to improve my dance, acting, and voice technique. Plus a lot of repetiore which is really helpful for auditions. My experience was very positive and I enjoyed the program a lot. I really liked how professional and focused everyone was. It will definately be really good for you if you go to a regular high school and don’t get much studio theater training, I found the classes really helpful and definately prepared me for going into the performing arts high school I attend now. Although I had a friend who did the program last summer (she attended summer before senior year) and she said that she didn’t find it beneficial because she had already learned everything that they were teaching, this is probably just because she had had so much training at the performing arts school before she went. Personally I would recommend this program to anyone who really wants the chance to do musical theater at a high level and work hard. You will definately learn a lot in the workshops and have a lot of fun. If anything you will learn new material and have new songs to add to your rep.
The way the program was structured when I attended was that we had classes in the morning in dance, acting, and voice, and in the afternoon we would rehearse the show. The program is only two weeks long so they will mail you all the music and scenes before hand and you will be expected to have the material learned and memorized when you start rehearsals which really gives you a taste of what its like in the professional world. They also had workshops with proffesionals working in theater and musical theater, which was something really nice and I enjoyed a lot. We actually had the oppertunity to work our solos with one woman who came from New York city to work with us, she helped us with the acting (beats and intentions), which was a new concept to me when I went to the intensive.
I couldn’t tell you how long its been around but I would guess about ten years, it seemed to be the fourth or fith year of the program when I attended. They make it clear though that they are looking for students that really have a passion for musical theater so just be confident and know your material when you audition and you’ll be great.

The Boston Conservatory has a summer intensive but you have to pass a dance audition. It is for high school, college and pro’s.

Thank you for all that information, GraceMT. This program sounds perfect for me, seeing as I go to a regular high school and really want to take my performing skills to the next level. I’m really confident in both my singing and acting abilities so I hope that whoever is judging me can see that. I can hardly wait for even my audition at this point (Though I will soon have something else to think about because the musical at my school is going on now with the performances a week before my scheduled audition for this intensive). I’m really hoping I get in now lol.

Has anyone attended Summer Theatre Institute at Julliard. If so how was it. Should my daughter go there or to CAP 21

Albuquerquemom, I suggest you post in one of the NYU threads regarding CAP21… it has nothing to do with Hartt.

a HS junior who does MT at school and community looking for a rich summer program on college campus, northeast or mid-atlantic region…i know time is running short. any recommendations?

@GRACEMT I am going to Hartt’s summer intensive, and am wondering what is the dress code? Also, are dance shoes/character shoes a requirement? How much did you prepare before attending camp? Thanks.
@ajsinger18 - The posts from this thread are quite old, and most people don’t check this forum that often so you might not get a reply from the original poster. My D goes to Hartt as an MT student, but did not go to the summer intensives. I would give a call to the school and ask what you should bring. My D has friends who have done the program and really loved it. Hope you have a great time!
This is about 6 months late, but my daughter went to the SMTI pre professional program last summer (2016). She learned a lot and had fun. They put on a pretty good showcase/revue at the end. My only regret was that it was 2 weeks and not longer.
