Hi! Beside NYU's Steinhardt Music Theatre summer program, does anyone know of any other summer musical theatre programs for rising college freshmans? Thanks!

you should check out carnegie mellon’s summer musical theatre program.

is it for rising college freshman or just high school students?

CMU is for rising juniors and seniors in HS, not rising college freshmen.

You really should do a search of the MT Forum as there have been threads on this exact topic before. Sometimes those who have been here a long time, who love to help, are not as inclined to answer the same questions on a regular basis. So, always use the search function first. Just a suggestion.

Off the top of my head, these summer MT programs include those who are out of high school:

Broadway Theater Project
CAP21 Professional Musical Theatre Training Program
Circle in the Square Theater School Summer Workshop in Musical Theatre
Perry-Mansfield’s Pre-Professional Intensive in Musical Theater
NYU/Steinhardt Summer Study in Music Theatre

Be aware that Stagedoor Manor also takes students the summer following HS graduation.

This is not meant to be a comprehensive list.

Hope this is a start.

(the plural of freshman is freshmen )

Also:
Penn State Summer Theater Project: Musical Theater Program

Triple Arts Program - Western Carolina University

Work with Broadway stars such as Terrence Mann, Charlotte d’Amboise, Christopher d’Amboise, Kelly Crandall and more in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. This is a very intense program! For ages 16-22, covers all singing, dancing and acting with a showcase at the end of the two weeks.

This summers session is July 18- August 1 2010. Visit [Welcome to Triple Arts](http://www.triplearts.com) or the Western Carolina page for more details!

Northwestern University offers a summer program in acting, although I do not know if music theatre is an option. The program is called Cherubs, but it may only be open to high school students. Several participants have posted on CC that they were subsequently admitted into Northwestern’s famed theatre/acting major which includes an “by audition only” musical theatre concentration beginning in the sophomore year. (Time magazine recently published a Top Ten list for the past decade and 3 of the top 5 of the top ten plays of the decade were written or directed by current Northwestern theatre faculty, including the top play of the decade. One of the 3 of the top 5 plays was originally written, directed, produced & acted entirely by Northwestern University students & faculty.)
Also contact Connecticutt College regarding a professional & student theatre program during the summers on campus. I don’t know the details, but my understanding is that it is a highly respected summer program.

Northwestern’s NHSI (Cherubs), which is a five week theater/acting program, along with its two-week Musical Theater Extension, is for rising seniors in HS only. It is not for current college students which is what this thread concerns.

FYI: There is a thread pinned to the top of the MT Forum that lists Summer MT programs primarily geared toward HS students. Northwestern/Cherubs is listed there.

Can you provide a link to summer theater programs at Conn College? I am unable to locate that, and am not aware of it. Thank you.

By chance, are you talking about…
Theatermakers Summer Intensive at the O’Neill Theater Center (National Theater Institute) in Waterford, CT? That is open to college students. But it is not MT. It is for either acting, directing, or playwriting. However, the National Musical Theater Conference (professional) takes place there in summer and those attending the summer intensive have interaction with that, I believe. I see that college credit for this program will be awarded by Conn College.

Thanks for everyones help! Soozievt- I have searched numerous times for threads regarding this, might you know of any or where to find them? Thanks!

I just searched the MT Forum using the words “Summer programs” for the subject titles…that was one start.

For instance, I got 16 threads and I opened a couple and found these to be on your topic:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/793952-summer-programs.html?highlight=summer+programs

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/185486-summer-programs-college-students.html?highlight=summer+programs

Then, there is also the Big List of MT Summer Programs and while many of those are for HS age, if you go through the listings, some come up as also taking college age students:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/122525-summer-program-big-list-data-info-keep-adding.html

Then, once you find a few by name on those threads, you can search the colleges they are affiliated with (if they are affiliated with a college…not all are) in the MT College Sub Forums at the top and see if there are threads devoted to those programs specifically, or use the search function to search for threads on the programs mentioned here (ie., there are threads just on Broadway Theater Project).

I can’t do any more of the legwork for you but that’s a start of how to go about it. Further, I also took some time to list some programs for you right ON THIS thread here and that’s a good start (there are not a ton of summer MT programs for college students) and there were a couple of additional suggestions.

Yes, no I am so appreciative. Thank you so so much I have already looked into some of them and they all seem great! Thanks for all your help!

The Cherubs program at Northwestern University does have an MT extension. My oldest daughter, who has since graduated form NYU-Tisch, was involved in both the theatre program and the two week musical theatre extensive. My youngest daughter is currently considering which summer programs she would like to attend for MT and is considering the Cherubs. There is info for same at the NHSI website.

However, Cherubs is not open to those who have graduated high school.

(just want to make sure that is clear as this thread is an inquiry about MT Programs for post high school age)

I would recommend Broadway Comes to Denver. Very similar to the Broadway Theatre Project but for 9 days with only 60 students. Taught by Terrence Mann and Charlotte D’Amboise and other great faculty.

thanks so much hoosiermom2012. that program looks great i think i will send in my audition tape!

There’s an incredible summer musical theater training program in July called Music Theater Bavaria. It’s primarily for college students, but rising college freshmen are welcome to apply. It’s a study abroad program in Germany with 2 private voice lessons and 2 private coaching sessions per week, acting, dance, audition preparation, song presentation, master classes, performing, and more. Check the website for details!
