Received a brochure about their summer visits -- did anyone attend one? If so, was it worth it? They have a bus tour of Pittsburgh on the agenda -- did anyone take that?

If you're referring to the "Getting Ready" program - go. It's well worth the time for a rising hs senior. We had never been to Pitt, and my D said that's where she'd go if she got $$ (which she did). We were impressed with the UPitt presentations and the schedule of events.

Definately go!

what's the difference between getting ready program, open house and just random summer visits?? I've been trying to figure this out but I can't seem to find an answer.

I can tell you that at the "Getting Ready" program last August there was no application fee if you handed in a completed application at the end of the program. So you had nothing to lose by completing an application, which was quite brief. (You could then send in your transcript and other info.) The program is also specifically geared toward rising hs seniors.

we are headed to pitt on friday with our son for the "so you want to be a ...majpr". this is a two day program, where, my son wil spend all day friday learning about the business program, then he stays overnight at a dorm and goes to the "get ready" program saturday. sounds like a really nice program that they offer.

i will let you know how it was when we return. we are from nyc area.

yeah I'm thinking about visiting pitt I just dont' know which one to choose, either "so you want to be a...", "the getting ready program","open house", or just random visits...

ps. nycollegedad.....can we choose to stay only 1 day for the get ready program, or do we have to stay overnight at a dorm?

yes. you can just stay for one day. i would highly recommend the "i want to be a ?" if your child knows, or thinks they know what they want to major in.

if not, i would go to the general open houses the admissions rep who joined us for lunch was great and gave us lots of information.

apply early
vsits to the campus are recorded and certainly help an applicant
admission to the college of arts and sciences has a much higher acceptance rate then the college of bsiness. the college of business appears to be highly competitive. of the 1450 applicants to the colege of business ths past year, 310 were accepted (aproximately a 22% acceptance rate) vs. nearly 50 % for the college of arts and sciences.

i thought the college did a great job with their program.

We just returned from the overnight. My D visited in Feb (very cold!) and LOVED it. The tour guide (Pitt Pathfinder) suggested we return for this visit - which was more informative. She stayed overnight in the dorm - she got to meet other potential applicants and informally learn more about the college as well as experience first hand the dorm rooms! In the morning we attended a session on academic majors and then did a bus tour of Pittsburgh - which was a nice little extra. They split parents up from students for lunch and she sat with current Pitt students and found out a lot more about the school as well as an internship position she has interest in. Pittsburgh is really a very beautiful, clean city. You can take advantage of being in a city while being close to nature, parks, etc. She applied last night and hopes to get accepted. We definitely found it worth it and a fun weekend!
