Summer options for freshman

After being unsuccessful in finding bigger-name research opportunities, I am now looking for a summer job. I'm planning on dual majoring in Cognitive Science and Computer Science so by sometime at the end of the next academic year I would like to be working in a related field for either of my majors.

Currently I have a job as a research assistant but I'm taking most of the summer off to explore additional career opportunities and increase my experience.

For the summer I'm planning on getting some volunteering experience with a hospital and a dog shelter because I love dogs a LOT but can't own one. In terms of future internships and research opportunities does it matter if I pursue summer research or a summer part-time, non-science related job?

I’d recommend research but make it relevant to what you want to end up doing. Either way, just do something. Employers love work experience (especially RELEVANT which is why i advise research). Also try and see if the professor will bring you on in your first semester as paid work study (you can also sometimes get course credit if its relevant to your major).
