To help people plan ahead, the link has dates and info about the 2 day required summer orientation programs. Most 1st years pick 2 days in July, except international students and students from long distances can attend in August.

Overnight accomodations are provided for the student for the night between the two days. Parents can also attend, but must have their own accomodations and registration.

Parents should attend, it is extremely informative and very beneficial. It is a time to find out about virtually everything you possibly could want to know. Every topic, so it seemed, was covered. In addition, they allotted time for questions. These sessions discuss drinking, financial aid, quik pay, housing, move-in day, courses, and the list goes on and on. It was light-hearted, funny, serious, and very very well done. You should also attend the ‘fair’ they have in Newcomb on day 2. Lots of information and the ability to order things, set up accounts, get on email lists, put in your health forms, etc.

All in all an excellent way to spend 2 days. For those of you coming to VA for the first time just be aware our summers can be, well lets say, quite warm. Dress appropriately. Also, give your child space to explore the campus with new found friends and go to their own programs. They spend the night in the dorms and do fun activities, as well as register for classes for the Fall.

We were there last summer when the HUGE storm hit (pictures were on Dean J’s blog) and UVa handled it unbelievably well. When I witnessed that I was immensely impressed!

Just an FYI for international students or those who will be far away this summer: there is a session at the end of the summer, just before move in, for those who can’t attend a summer orientation session.
