My S will be attending the summer orientation at the end of June. My H and I will be staying in Nola but may not be able to attend any of the seminars or the dinner as he will be doing business and we will be going to dinners with clients while there. I know it's mainly for the students but will we be missing anything important?

I have a message into my sons counselor asking just that. My husband is in the same position. I’ll let you know what she says.

great - thanks so much!

Nothing about summer orientation is critical, or even that important for parents. Certainly nice that it helps you feel connected to what your child is going to be experiencing, but it is more important for the student by far. Even then there are a lot of students that don’t do summer orientation. We are going at the end of June also, and mostly it is so my wife can see what I have been talking about for years and what my D and I have seen twice already. Mostly just a fun trip (as fun as NOLA can be in the summer!), and it will definitely help my wife picture things when my D talks about them.

It really is not necessary for parents to attend any of that.

thanks everyone for your replies. now i won’t feel guilty for missing anything!

I concur that there’s little in Summer Orientation that’s important for parent (or even students IMO). But you might consider using some of the time to connect your student, and even yourself, to NOLA. Ride the Trolley end to end. Visit Audubon Park. Browse the shop windows along Royal Street. Nearby, walk along the river downtown. Drive up to Lake Ponchartrain and City Park. Have breakfast at Camilla Grill. Or a Po’ Boy on Magazine Street. There’s lots to see and do in NOLA … Summer Orientation can provide you with an early start!

My H and I went with our S to the April 4th Destination Tulane and the first day of the Honor’s weekend. I’m beginning to think it’s really not necessary for him to attend either the summer orientation or the NOLA Experience. He will be able to enroll in classes online, and June and August are probably the worst times to be in NO. I don’t think he wants to apply for the NOLA Experience because he wants to spend as much time as possible with his sister and his friends before leaving for college. Any thoughts about detrimental effects of not attending either of these events?

No detrimental effects whatsoever. Many students don’t do summer orientation, and NOLA experience is limited to 100 students anyway, so obviously most don’t do that. In the context of 4 years at Tulane (at least I assume you hope only 4 years, LOL), these are minor events.

My D and I went to Honors weekend, and we had visited a year prior during one of our “national campus tours”. As I said above, the only reason we are going at the end of June is so her mother can see it at a less frantic time than move in, although I agree it is not the ideal time to be in NOLA. So I wouldn’t worry about him missing anything, because while NOLA Experience is probably fun in its own right, it isn’t important as far as him feeling more integrated at the school.

Thanks for your advise fallenchemist. That’s exactly what I was concerned about and what you said makes a lot of sense to me. One less thing to stress over!

Yeah, I am pretty convinced that we parents are more stressed than most of our kids! LOL. Maybe we will see you at move in.
