Hey everyone! I'm rather confused about summer orientation, and am hoping someone on here can provide some clarification. As I was submitting my Enrollment Deposit I saw a question asking about summer orientation so I thought it best to figure this out now. If this has been posted before, I apologize. I tried searching but nothing seemed to come up...

I guess my biggest question is do I need to go to a summer orientation? I can't seem to figure out what percentage of the freshman class usually attends one and just how strongly recommended it really is. I'm from the East Coast so a plane ticket will be pretty expensive. On the one hand, I hate to "waste" that money if the program really isn't that valuable and not that many people attend. On the other hand, I don't want to shoot myself in the foot by not participating in something that could be really meaningful and helpful. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

There are lots of activities and information presented - you could probably manage without all of that but:

You register for Fall classes at orientation. If you do not attend you will register after everyone else is done. They set aside classes for each orientation session (including TO classes if any of you are reading this) so it doesn’t matter if you go to an early or late session, but if you don’t go there isn’t anything set aside for you.

There is one session at the very end generally meant for the International students so they can just make one trip and then stay on for the start of classes - maybe you could call and ask if you can attend that one.

Good luck!

I think most incoming freshmen will attend; part of the reasoning for that is the high number of orientation sessions throughout the summer. That seems to tell me USC expects many attendees. My Explore host told me that you don’t HAVE to attend (They will send you registration materials, etc. over the mail), but it’s a good way to get familiar with the school as well as meet your fellow students. I’m actually somewhat in the same dilemma, if I commit to USC. But maybe some current freshman/students can give us some input on what orientation is all about?

Hmm…I may be wrong about the mailing of materials to those who don’t attend. Try asking them on the website.

Students are expected to attend Orientation. We hope that each student’s transition to USC will be eased by the information and assistance they receive at orientation.

You will meet with your adviser to select a schedule. In each major, there are differing requirements and some are quite rigid to fit all pre-reqs in at the right semester. In addition, if you are in TO you will get a TO adviser. In that session, they will distribute the TO course descriptions for Fall.

But on top of all that, you will get to know your new campus better, do a little business (switch majors? waive health insurance fees? check out the dorms?) and have a chance to meet other incoming freshmen (watch your FB friends go up right after orientation!) and start making new friends for the next four years.

blissfulting, they do mail the registration materials to those who really can’t make it, but you can’t register until everyone else is done.

If there is any way you can make it, DO!
