The only difference between the regular sessions and the International Session is advising and enrolling in classes. In sessions A-J, students meet with an advisor and enroll in classes. For Session K (International) students, they will need to create their own schedule and enroll in classes online around August 3 or 4. Then, once they arrive during Fall Orientation, will meet with an advisor to fine tune their schedule. We do send pertinent information with instructions on how to do that.

Does anyone know whether or not attending only Session K (int'l student orientation) will put one at a disadvantage in terms of course registration and enrollment? Does being an Echols scholar make a difference?

How are all of you international Echols students planning your summer orientation schedules?

if you are Echols you can get into any class, even if its full, right? or something along those lines.

xoverseas, they reserve spots in lower level classes for first years. I didn't know anyone who had any particular trouble getting into the classes they wanted, to be honest.

No. Chance to register earlier than some others isn't getting into any full class.

As an OOSer (Ca), D attended that final session last year. As stated above, UVa had already given all the students attending the int"l summer orientation the opportunity to register for classes online early in August--before opening the system to everyone. However, D had some anxious moments getting classes--even then. She quickly went from trying to get her first choices to just trying to find classes to fill her schedule. She found it quite frustrating. The biggest problem was foreign language. For all the classes being offered, nothing was available at her level (2nd semester level). We understand that it is a common problem for 1st years/fall term....
However, once the system was open to everyone for drops/adds, etc. (about the time of fall orientation I think?), she was able to get almost everything she wanted...except language.
We never did understand why there isn't advisor time during that orientation.....but it all worked itself out.
On the bright side, dorms were opened early for the students in that session, so they got to move in a day or two before the crowds arrived. That alone was worth the scheduling difficulties.

still pretty good though

Int'l students can even register for an earlier session if they want to. It's just a matter of them wanting to spend the remaining time until fall orientation in the states, or going back and spend another trip back to the states again after the summer orientation. In general, it's advisable to attend the last summer orientation session to facilitate for greater convenience. I believe you can enter the US at the earliest 30 days before classes start, so you might not be in summer orientation session B or C as it is too early.

I believe they lock up spots for first-years and release them at every orientation, so you probably won't have a problem with it anyway.

All Echols students, whether international or US citizens, do not get the benefits of being an Echols until the end of the fall semester - where you will be able to register for Spring classes earlier than non-Echols students.
