Northwestern NHSI Cherubs!!! I did it and it was an amazing experience. Breathing theatre all day for 5 weeks (you can do the musical theatre extension for 7), in classes and rehearsals from 8 in the morn to 10 at night, around brilliant faculty and kids…I’d be more than happy to answer any questions about it!:-)

The NYU Tisch summer program is a complete rip-off. They out-source their acting program to studio schools in Manhattan, like Stella Adler or Lee Strasberg. D opted to do the Stella Adler program one summer at a cost 1/4 of what NYU charges. Basically the same program.

Thanks for the info! My D definitely wants to apply to Cherubs next year (she is a rising JR). I looked at Stella Adler and Strasberg and their program doesn’t end until Aug 10th…school starts before it ends! Anyone heard about the UNC program?

@hmh3515,
While it is certainly true that NYU summer acting program is expensive, it is not a “complete rip-off.” Not, at least, in the experience of my child, who attended last summer. As you may not know, Tisch “out-sources” (not sure I would use that term, but I will follow your line of thought here for a moment) its BFA acting program to various studios during the regular academic year. That is one of the unique features of the program and the basis of its success. The summer program does the same. My child was assigned, in a group of about 15, to New Studio Broadway, and had Kenneth Noel Mitchell, an NYU faculty member, as the primary acting instructor:

[Mitchell: Tisch School of the Arts at NYU](http://drama.tisch.nyu.edu/object/mitchellk.html)

Voice and movement and other instructors were also NYU faculty or affiliates. The training was excellent. Guest lecturers included Louis Scheeder on Shakespeare:

[Scheeder: Tisch School of the Arts at NYU](http://drama.tisch.nyu.edu/object/ScheederL.html)

We also had a choice between Stella Adler and Tisch for summer programs. SA is certainly very good training and definitely cheaper, a very good option. What drew us to Tisch, however, was the excellent housing and chaperoning. In the NYU dorms, summer students are organized into groups of 6-8 and assigned a resident assistant, a current Tisch sophomore working for the summer. The resident assistant accompanies them to and from the studio morning and afternoon, goes with them on all field trips, etc. It was quite reassuring to know that our small-town 17-year-old was being very closely supervised in the city.

The field trips, to various theatrical productions around the city, were also excellent.

And, finally, students come away with six college credits which could be transferable to other programs.

Yes, Tisch is expensive. But there is quite a bit of value for that expense.

My D attended CMU for the summer and loved it, but the faculty was NOT the regular college faculty. It still gave her excellent training and a feel for both college campus living and the intensity of a BFA program, along with a look at what the talent pool from around the country was like. I’d imagine that many of these college-sponsored programs are not necessarily using the same (or at least all of the same) faculty as the college students have during the school year.

I just heard that my daughter was accepted to BUSTI! We’re thrilled. Luckily I saw these posts and called to check on our status; the acceptance email never arrived. Best of luck to all who are still waiting.

PS: We still haven’t heard from Theatrebridge.

A quick note to anyone who’s waiting to hear from BUSTI–my son applied pretty early on and got an acceptance via e-mail on March 5th–but communication has been slim since then. He e-mailed to confirm that they’d received our deposit check, and received an e-mail update saying that they will be sending info packets out in early May (to kids who have been accepted and sent the deposit). I’d bet that they’re just a little swamped with regular admissions issues right now! Anyway, I hope that helps for anyone who is waiting to hear from Boston. My son is really psyched for the program, and we’re looking forward to the experience. Good luck to all :)

^ what she said By the way Times3 we did not receive that email about the packets being sent out in early May.

To clarify–our email from BUSTI was indeed in response to my son’s inquiry about whether they’d received the deposit, etc.–I think we must be bugging them more than anybody! My guess is that they’ll e-mail the information to everyone in May and until then, an air of mystery will be sustained. :)

NHSI Cherubs. There is literally NO program like it in the world. You send off your talented kidr and come back with the most driven, self aware, disciplined adult you never knew was there.
Also, everyone there is smart as hell which you don’t find at other programs.

anyone else have a child going to CMU this summer?

My daughter is going to BU summer intensive this summer. She is thrilled to be going but we don’t know much about it - never knew anyone going there. She is dedicated to her pursuit of acting though and we read it was an excellent program if you want to learn the craft. I would love to hear more about from someone who has had a child in their program!

Cheekychee – My daughter did a program at Stella Adler last year and is doing CMU’s program this summer. I can’t tell you specifically about BU’s program from an experience standpoint but all these programs seem pretty similar in that they try to replicate in a very similar fashing what the conservatory training experience is for the BFA students. They take the basic building block kinds classes – voice, movement, scene study, etc. – that the BFA’s take. I think the most helpful part of these programs is that the kids get to see if this is really the life they want.

I’m attending the 6-week Interlochen camp this summer! I recieved 100% of my requested financial aid and we’re premiering a new Kevin Ludwig play! What I love about Interlochen is that it’s NOT offiliated with any single premier acting university. One of my biggest goals is to build up a solid, comprehensive list of colleges. At Interlochen, I’ll be learning from teachers from all over the country and will be recieving more objective insight and advise. Also, Interlochen has the same prestige attached. I’m very excited! The whole audition and registration process has been nothing but warm and accomodating. I can’t wait to be in the midst of so much culture this summer- what with all of Interlochen’s rich performing arts departments. We’re also visiting a college fair and doing a considerable ammount of audition preparation. I’m sure that I’m biased, but this was the best deal/experience that this past year’s research has produced. I was so excited to be accepted.

^^^Cheekychee–my son is going to BUSTI this summer and I got some great info from a parent (MomtoC) whose daughter attended last year. Her advice: be sure to bring or get a fan as the dorm rooms are hot, and come equipped with monologues (for next year’s auditions) if you would like help with them during the BU program. There’s at least one other CC parent (OddDad) whose daughter will be there this summer. Feel free to send me a PM if you’d like more detail, but I also found some helpful information just by searching the theater-drama forum for “BUSTI.” My son just got his information packet and as the school year winds down he’s increasingly psyched for Boston. Hope to meet some CC folks there on July 1.

My son attended BUSTI in 2010 and absolutely loved it! He also came back as a much more accomplished actor. Although he has decided to not major in theater in college, he continues to act in productions and has developed an academic interest in Playwriting.

And…my daughter is attending BUSTI this year! We offered her other choices, but based on her brother’s experience there, she decided on BUSTI as well.

We cannot recommend the program enough.

Looks like I’ll be meeting some of you on July 1!

ActingDad -

My son will be attending the CMU Pre-C Acting program this summer. We live in Pittsburgh and I’m an alumna (Chemistry, so no help there!) - I hope your daughter is as excited as my son is about the program!

I send you a pm bookowl.

Just checking in as the time draws near to start packing for those summer programs! My son and I are leaving in 12 days for Boston, making a big loop through the midwest to visit Evansville and DePaul, then driving over to see Syracuse before arriving in Boston. He’s excited but not ready, and I expect next week will be chaotic as we run around acquiring all the “stuff” (work gloves? extra long sheets? a really good fan?) and while he tries to nail down some monologue material to bring along. Hope to hear from and possibly meet a few of you up there on July 1. So far we have only heard about girls who are going–any parents of boys heading to BUSTI, please let us know!

Sounds like a lot of our rising seniors have great summer plans. Safe travels and good luck to everyone headed to CMU, Interlochen, Cherubs, Theatrebridge, and more!

Times3… please come back and let us know how your S liked BUSTI this summer. My S is a rising Junior who will be applying to BUSTI next summer. We live in CA and have never been to Boston… although he will probably apply to BU for college. He applied and was accepted to Tisch’s acting program this summer but he decided to go to another amazing program in Canada to study Shakespeare. with The Stratford Shakespeare CO. I would also like to know what you guys think about DePaul when you visit as my S really likes Chicago.

Hope your S has a fantastic experience.
