Summer Pre-College Art Programs

My d took the textiles studio last summer and it's my impression that each studio is very variable depending on the instructor. As for the experience with textiles, she enjoyed it but was not pushed too much. On the other hand, it was a great experience for her first time away from home. The kids have to go out in groups of 3, so it's instant buddy-building, and they're allowed to go into SF on the weekends. The area can be sketchy if you travel too far to the south, but the school itself is in a very cool part of Oakland. Feel free to email me if you have specific questions.

Yes^^^, RISD uses nude models for its figure drawing course, and I'm sure the other schools do too. I believe that for the beginning figure drawing classes, the models are a bit more fuller figured, because it's easier to draw more rounded shapes than lean, sinewy muscle types with more visible bone structure. (Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, everyone - it's just a guess that seems to make sense!)

My daughter is going to SAIC precollege this summer, she got a scholarship for full tuition. Their handbook says they use nude models, too.

Hello,

Does anyone happen to know if the Cooper Union Summer outreach program accepts 9th graders? The website and application are ambiguous.

Thanks!

RISD uses nude models for their summer program. all majors have a drawing class that includes figure drawing. there is an open studio on one of the week nights, it was thursday when i was there. the models are mostly middle age and older. RISD was a really amazing program and it really gave me a taste of the amount of work that art school requires. i would recommend it over any others. a few of my friends also did the pratt precollege the year before they did risd, all of them said RISD was way more intense. im going to do the SVA precollege program this coming summer, so ill report back after that.

Does anyone have any experience with the pre-college program at the Tyler School at Temple University?

You are all very lucky to have received scholarships this summer. Our income has been cut by 60% among other things and my daughter didn’t get one offer for any of the summer art programs she applied for. She did get into all of them, we just have to come up with the money for her to go. We don’t have it… She’s going to try to sign up for a Community College class to work on her portfolio.

Anyone know of pre-college residential art programs that will take a rising junior who is not yet 16? D has a November bday and will not be able to attend Pratt or NYU because of her age.

Snappy1: I understand how awful that is. Last year my daughter was also admitted to SAIC precollege, but with only a little merit/need aid – far too little for her to attend. I felt horrible that I couldn’t make that happen for her. Instead, she took a community college art course to do more representational work. It was much better than she thought it would be and helped her be a stronger artist for this year’s applications. Even so, we had to negotiate with SAIC, they could only do a scholarship that I could afford if she went to part of the program, not the whole five weeks.

Does your state have a summer art program? The one in my state is much more affordable than any of the university pre-college programs, and the financial aid is much more generous. It’s probably too late to apply now, but not for next year.

Finally, my suggestion is that you talk to schools directly, talk to the pre-college program folks and the reps at portfolio day. I think in our case, my daughter was up front with SAIC that they’re her first choice school, that she really wants to be there, that she is committed to art, and that seemed to make them more interested in trying to work with us to get her aid that worked for us.

Hey I was hoping to find out if anyone else is signed up for the corcoran two-week portfolio development program. Please let me know if you are!

Does anyone know about the pre college program at Memphis College of Art?

Has anyone been to or know any information about AAU, I’m a sophmore in high school and this is one of the schools I have been looking at. I’m mostly interested in photography and graphic design.
Or if there are any other schools you have experience with that have a good photography program let me know

I am a high school senior and I went to Parsons in New York for their summer intensive studies program this past summer. I learned a lot of technique and grew more as an artist and as a person, too. It is a very, very good program.

Does anyone know if the Putney School summer programs are any good?

Does anyone have experience with the pre-college summer program in Fashion Design/Merchandising at Drexel?

Thanks.

does anyone know anything about the NYU summer intensive? I want to attend a program where I can get strong representational painting and drawing pieces as well as more out of the box pieces (and I would love if I could experiment with different mediums). Are there any intensive summer programs that provide this experience?

You can find a fairly extensive list of pre-college summer art and design programs at: [Art & Design Educational Advisors, LLC](http://www.artdesignea.com/resources.html)
