Has anyone participated at the Summer program at Brown University, if so what was it like, was it worth going, what are the classes like? I will be going this year and have no idea what to expect

Last summer, I applied to So You Want To Be A Doctor and ended up in Intro to Bio-Medical Science, for which I am very grateful. The class was amazing - I absolutely fell in love with dissections (and I enjoyed the fact that the whole class could talk about our dissection over lunch, which I could never do with anyone else), and got to visit labs and see people’s research and it was a huge help come AP Bio. I found the community very close; the RAs really made sure that you had the opportunity to form close friendships.

Which class are you in? The workload and character of each class is very different - I was there for a few hours a day, with light outside reading and a few projects.

The program was really perfect for what I needed at the time - nothing too intense, yet intellectually stimulating. It wasn’t the type of class with homework or grades; everyone was there to learn because they wanted to learn. However, if you’re really gung-ho, it might not be as intense as you want, though I found it perfect for summer before junior year.

My only concern, really, was the cost. But I think that’s up to you.

It was amazing! Honestly, three hour long classes are just awesome! I can’t believe that our school shortened our classes from 45 minutes to 40 minutes. I feel like I’ve learned so much while I’ve been here. I have a three week course next week, but I am also close to finishing my course (writing). My teacher is amazing, and I’ve learned more here in a day than I could have in three days back at my school.

Your social life depends on if you are a commuter or a dormer. Those who live in the dorms will be closer to each other (which makes several of us commuters jealous…). I think your experience will be better if you are a dormer, but if you’re a commuter, the experience can be just as good. You just have to make friends with other commuters as well, because chances are that you won’t see any other dormers outside of class (well, if you’re like me).

It was definitely worth going.

Have fun when you get here!
