Wesleyan has a 5-week arts intensive program called the Center for Creative Youth. The majors available are: Creative Writing, Dance, Vocal music, Instrumental music, Visual arts, Photo, Filmmaking, Tech theatre, Theatre, and Musical Theatre. Northwestern's National High School Institute (NHSI) Theatre Arts Division- Five weeks of straight theatre arts, accepted by application (transcript, recommendation, essays, etc.), and you can send in an audition tape for the two week musical theatre extension. Extremely demanding physically and emotionally (you will be working from morning to night). I believe scholarships are available. Absolute best experience of my life.

Most of these programs look very good for HS students...how I wish we had known more about them a few years ago. What do you think a student who is going to be a Freshman in 2006 should be doing this summer?

Vikkie, there is a thread to discuss summer programs and I believe this one is just to list basic information. You may want to take your question to that thread ;-). My "short" answer is that there is nothing that they SHOULD be doing....it depends what they wish to do. I could share what my kids did but that may not apply to the next person. They did what they wanted to do including what we required them to do (regarding work).

We are just over the river but I have never heard of MPulse. My D will be around this summer for the first time in 3 years and we are looking for a local program. Where is this out of and is there a website?

Thanks vocaldad. i was hoping for something close to home since we are not in a position to pay for a residencies program this summer. I think I got stuck on the Kentucky part of Nick's comment and didn't realize I actually knew this was the Michigan program.

The MT program info is on Page 7 of this brochure.

Also, I read the current description of this program and it seems to be really growing and evolving. I love the fact that the performance at the end of the now three week program is a TOTALLY original revue, combining songs from different shows with new choreography, orchestrations, etc. all arranged by Brent Wagner, the UM MT Chair. Combined with the workshops on college apps and auditions and the masterclasses offered, this program sounds really exciting.

Lastly, vocaldad, I forget where your son is now in the process......is he auditioning for UM this year? If so, and I can help in any way, please let me know. I am a shameless, UM MT booster!!!! Go Blue!
