The MT page has a thread on summer opportunities/programs geared toward college students and I thought that it might be useful to start a similar thread here, because it is time for college acting students my S included to begin thinking about what they are going to do this summer. I know that there are unified auditions for summer theatre positions, like the NETC auditions, but my impression is that summer stock theatre is more focused on MT and so unless the acting student has strong vocal skills, the chance of being selected is diminished. Also, there are apprenticeship and training programs, but these generally involve payment of a fee and so this opportunity may not be attractive to some acting students if they need to earn $ during the summer. (As an aside, my S did participate in such an apprenticeship program last summer and I can provide information, if anyone is interested). Training programs that I have seen referenced on CC include Shakespeare and Companys Summer Training Institute and Circle in the Square summer workshop, among others. There is also the paid or unpaid internship route. I am sure that there are current or former students or their parents and CC sages who may have very helpful suggestions for college BA or BFA acting majors looking to do something acting-related this summer!

good idea, and nansan, yes, we’d love to hear of the internship your S did last summer!

The Virginia Shakespeare Festival has 6 acting intern positions and pays $1200 and provides free housing in the dorms at William and Mary. Applications are due in mid Dec, and auditions are in D.C. and Williamsburg, Va. It’s too late to apply this year, but one to keep in mind for next year.

This is a great thread. My first-year BFA D hopes to have some good summer experiences, but she - and we - would prefer that they don’t cost us anything (or maybe even make her a little money). She says she’s not quite ready to apply formally yet this summer, but definitely after sophomore year. This summer she will intern as an assistant director for a local community theatre (no stipend that I am aware of), and probably take a summer class for her gen eds; if she’s lucky she’ll also get some kind of paying job.

What these kids can do in the summers is a great resource for us on this forum. I hope lots of people will post. My D’s school is quite good at helping kids find summer internships; if I hear of things her peers are doing, I’ll let you all know.

Does anyone know if such summer opportunities are open to international students? I’ve been trying to find that out for some time…

I know that we should be able to do internships, but what about performing opportunities and back stage work? Are international students allowed to take part in summer stock productions and non equity plays?

NETC has a separate audition room for “Acting Only,” so can be a good option for a summer theatre audition conference for actors.

In addition to the programs mentioned above:

Yale has a summer drama program – [Summer Conservatory for Actors | summer.yale.edu](Summer Drama Program | Yale Summer Session)

Theatremakers Summer Intensive – http://www.theoneill.org/national-theater-institute/theatermakers/

Cminor – are you an International student currently studying at a US university, or an international student looking to come to the US for the summer to train/ work?

The answer is different depending.

Well actually I’m applying… hopefully I’ll be admitted to a university in US this fall. Just wanted to make sure that I’ll be able to make full use of my summers gaining experience in theatre:)
