Summer program or championship?

do summer programs help me in my chances to get admitted into brown? i have a really good chance of winning this jiujitsu tournament, but i think it may be at the same time as i am at a summer program at brown. which one should i choose?

I would say to do the summer program if you want to grow and learn not for admissions plug. Rumor has it that Brown doesn’t use this info in admissions but I bet winning an important tournament would look pretty good to them! On that note…I did attend the summer program and it was the best summer of my life. I came back a totally different person. The personal growth I experienced couldn’t be replaced with anything else. Yes, I would love it if Admissions took this into consideration but I would never give up the memories and experiences even if it was a negative. Yes, it was that good.

But the point isn’t necessarily to use it as a hook for getting into Brown. Think of it this way: if you can ace the course, then you have proved to Brown and any other university you apply to that you are fully capable of doing college-level coursework. I think that’s what you’re going for more than anything else.

But if you decide to go to the tournament, make sure you kick ass and write about it somewhere in your app!

sukotto, good point. The class I took was a lot of work but I did learn a lot!

go to brown.

i did. it was legit. so many friends that i still talk to! most of the other summer programs i have been do i have lost contact with my friends, but not from brown.

do it.

You should attend the summer program only if there is a true academic reason to do so – to take classes in a subject you are deeply interested in. It is not a ticket to acceptance, because anyone who can pay can go there. If jiujitsu is something you love and have been doing for years, then it’s odd to me that you would pass up an opportunity to attend a tournament.

Is there any way to do both?
