Summer program that combines music and academics? ...

I am wondering if there's any program out there that has both-- music and academics? I was thinking maybe some of the prep schools might but I can't find any. My son is a 10th grader and a classical percussionist.

I have never heard of any. Usually the point of the summer music programs is to really immerse the students in music so they get an idea of what it is like to do music 24-7. For the less serious musician, summer programs are a time for musicians to push themselves and play with much stronger musicians than they are likely to find in their schools or to learn new skills. Most kids with a strong musical bent feel like they get enough academics during the school year and are looking for something different.

I have to recommend the Putney School's Excel programs. They have a website. They take place on college campuses, usually Williams, Amherst, one summer they had UCAL, etc. They offer a wide variety of academics and arts courses and are a very top notch program. My son did this the summer before junior year of high school, took African drum carving and Social Psychology. He had a fabulous time, and the hand drumming stuck with him to this day as a junior in college.

Thanks jazzzmomm. Shennie, I understand and, honestly, he would love to spend the whole summer doing music but I have some academic concerns. The alternative (which I am considering) is to spend part of the summer doing music and part of the summer doing academics-- but it seems most programs take place in July.

My D went to Interlochen and did voice + creative writing, which some would count as academic.
