Hi guys, this is my first post on cc!
I wanted your opinions on my summer activities. I am currently a junior and I have two options, attend a summer program or volunteer in oaxaca mexico as an English tutor. I speak chinese, english, and spanish.
My problem is i cannot decide which to do. I would really like to see Mexico and live there, but I also want to try and do TASP or the jsa summer program. As of right now, I must decide which one to put more effort into. I cannot afford to pay for any of these programs by myself. TASP is free, but the essays are extremely time-consuming. JSA summer program I would have to rely on a scholarship to pay for half of it. As for the volunteer trip, I would have to begin fundraising right now.
Which program do you think would be looked upon most highly in terms of college admissions? Although I am doing these programs because they all suit my interests, I still want to help myself out for next year as well.
Thanks for reading this!

hmm i wouldnt base my decision on which of the three activities colleges would find the most interesting because personally i think they would give you props for attending any of them. no matter which one you choose they would see that you did something worthy with your summer and not lay around with a bag of chips.

to me the mexico trip sounds really cool but what do you plan do at the two summer program?. all you have to do is decide which one you think you would enoy the most and can pay to go also. if you want to go to one of the ones that cost money here is what i would do: since you said the TASP program is free i would write the essays and i would also try to raise money for one of the other trips. if it happens that you cant raise all the money and you can no longer go to them you have the TASP program to fall back on.

thanks special_foreign, ill keep ur advice in mind

Tutoring in Mexico is definitely something most college applicants can't say they've done. It would set you aside from the rest, IMO. So long as you aren't applying to any of the colleges I want to go to, go with that ;)

What special said and...

Really, if you can express how you feel about whatever program you choose in a very nice way, (and then tie it to your ECs and who you are), I think it would help you no matter what.

Or how about this... Perhaps you can go to one of those programs and do something in the mean time for the Mexico program and then have someone like your counselor or who ever mention what you did in a rec letter. That way, it shows initiative and your willingness to grasp all of your opportunities because they suit your interests.

wow all good ideas, thanks guys, i think im gonna put a lot of effort into my tasp apps, maybe ill get lucky and get in...
