Summer Program...

has anyone experienced it? Ifso, what was it like?

what KINDs of summer programs are you interested in? i went to the summer academy for math and science at carnegie mellon university (6 wks), and it was simply amazing. the fact that it was free was also a plus. i learned a TON, without sacrificing the social aspects of a student's life. in fact, we had a party almost every weekend, and if there wasn't one you could always go to one of the underage clubs downtown. the university also organized trips (to amusement parks, museums, plays/musicals, etc.), and at the end of the program, there was a cruise we could go to.

and it seems like colleges look very favorably upon the program. kids who i thought weren't extremely brilliant (but they are intelligent and are very involved in various activities, just not RSI-material...) ended up getting into stanford, yale, MIT, princeton, etc. early... and i'm sure more amazing results are coming in april.

the downside of the program is that it's pretty selective and if you're not a minority, your chances of getting in is slimmer than if you were one ('coz the program falls under the "summer programs for diversity"). but that doesn't mean there weren't non-URMs. i myself am an azn; you just have to write an essay talking about how you contribute to the diversity of a campus.

the poster is talking about yale's summer program...

o, that makes sense. i thought (s)he was posting it here to look for any summer program that'll help prepare the person's resume for when applying to yale or something.

Well, I am interrested in doing Calculus over the summer and maybe a science. I am a girl...so maybe that will help me a bit. So far I have been looking into the u of chicago summer program, northwestern, yale, and cornell. I am only in my sophomore year...and Yale want Juniors and higher. I am, however, 16, and I meet all of the prerequisets for calculus. I do not care for my school and would love to just focus on math during the summer so that I will be able to get as much out of it as possable. So if anyone has experienced the Yale program or any other program...I am happy to have the info!

Carngir mellon is for free?! Even for those out of state?

if you apply under the summer programs for diversity, then yes, the summer programs at CMU would be free. you might want to look into their APEA (Advanced Placement Early Admission) program, where you can take courses such as AP Calc and AP Chemistry or AP Physics, among others (not free if you don't apply under the aforementioned umbrella program). i'm not sure if they have a cut-off age, tho, so why don't you google it?
