wordie, can’t help you with the programs, specifically, but both Sewanee and Brevard are beautiful areas! We were at Sewanee last Monday (for something else), and my S spent a summer at Brevard some years back. One of my piano students attended Sewanee a few years ago for oboe, and enjoyed it. And my D’s violin teacher teaches there. And my S had a blast a Brevard, where his horn teacher now teaches. I think Brevard is probably a notch above Sewanee musically, but your S has some great options.

My D (flute) was accepted to Aria International Flute Boot Camp @ Mt. Holyoke and wait listed at Brevard and Eastern.
What do you think chances are for getting off of those wait lists and also, does anyone have any experience with the Aria programs?

Hey guys,
Decided on going to Banff after all! I’ll be there for the orchestra program, as well as doing internships before and after. It’ll be terrific!!!

Congrats, Cosmos! I admire your many creative solutions to how to spend your time. Combining internships with a festival sounds like a great idea.

On another topic, to provide the conclusion to D’s summer program search: She will be going to Aria International and Domaine Forget.

We just got word. DD is off to Oberlin’s summer organ camp. She loved her meeting with Paul David Christie earlier this spring, so she is very happy.

mom4 - I went to Orford last year and am returning this summer. Transportation is a bit tricky. If you’re flying in, once you get to the airport you’ll need to take a bus from ground transport to downtown (centre-ville) Montreal. Then from the centre-ville station, take the Sherbrooke express line bus and get off at the Magog stop. Once in Magog, call a taxi (the phone number is on the Orford website) and ask to go to Centre d’Arts Orford.

I encourage all of you to attend NHSMI at Northwestern University if you have the option. It is truly a gem! Admissions decisions are being sent out on a rolling basis.

My son is looking into going to Interlochen for the first time as a junior (will be senior high school student next year). We are interested in knowing a little bit about the different divisions of the Orchestra and Band at Interlochen.

Are the ‘bands’ generally made up of underclassmen (freshmen, sophomores) while the ‘orchestras’ are made up of upperclassmen (juniors, seniors)?

Does anyone have any experience at both Interlochen and the New England Music Camp to compare the experience at each?

I am a new member and please forgive me if this question has been covered already. My son (he is really the 88 fingers guy) is a Junior in HS considering majoring in composition in College. He applied for summer music composition programs. He was sent a letter from Interlochen that he was on the waiting list last month. Then he was accepted at NHSMI and accepted, today he was accepted to Interlochen. His goals are to learn as much as he can about theory, composition, and to end the summer with recordings of his compositions for applications next fall. I can’t find much about the program at Interlochen on line. Does anyone know what the composition program is like? He plays piano and french horn and would like to be part of orchestra or symphony as well. Will that be possible. How much of his time will be spent doing “campy” things, he’s done that with Boy Scouts for past six years and probably wouldn’t want too much. Not even sure if we can pull out of NHSMI at this point, so I will be researching that if need be. Interlochen is more $, and plus all the uniforms and extras will no doubt add up. I could and would do it if it is worth it, but I desparately need more info.

Interlochen is a fabulous place. My DD has been there 3 times. Once in the Intermediates and twice in the senior division. When the students arrive on campus, they are auditioned for placement in the orchestras and bands. Seating is done based on that audition. They fill the orchestras from the top down and then the bands. So, the very best trumpets, flutes, violins, cellos, … are placed in WYSO (top orchestra). Then, they fill the IP (Interlochen Philharmonic). Next, the top band and the second band. Obviously, the strings are in the orchestras not the band. Every 2 weeks everyone auditions again and people are moved up and down. I know last year one of the top cellists (first chair I believe) had just finished her freshman year in high school. So, I don’t think age is a factor at all.

To 88fingers, I would call Interlochen to ask some of your questions. I think that if he didn’t audition on french horn he would not be able to play in the ensembles. But I am not sure. Interlochen does some campy things, but not a lot. Mostly the students play in ensembles, practice, go to concerts, practice more, take lessons, practice…

Generally when you accept at one program, it is not a great idea to come back and tell them you got a better offer. If you decide to pull out of the first program, you need to be “asking permission” as opposed to announcing a done deal.

My S attended for two wonderful summers and loved it. I don’t think it is quite as competitive as Interlochen as far as the level of the higher orchestra but it is a great experience. The campers participate in their music activities all morning, classes, lessons, and rehearsals. Most afternoons are for “sports” or other activities. There are concerts some of the afternoons and many evenings. They have a concerto competition each session and the level of achievement of some of the students is high. There are two orchestras, two bands and several vocal groups. Placement is by audition. They also have a chamber music program. There was a 14 year old very talented cellist who sat 2nd chair in the upper orchestra who also played in my S’s string quartet. Campers have an opportunity to audition for honors concerts every week to show off their individual achievements.

It is a very supportive and nurturing place, a wonderful opportunity to spend a summer surrounded by music but definitely more of a camp environment. The campers are very supportive of one another. Last summer there was a high number of 17 year old boys returning so there was a large older group. I was very impressed with the faculty that I met, they come from all over the country.

I tried to convince my S to apply to a music festival instead of returning to camp last summer but he refused, he wanted to return to camp to be with his friends. His camp experience was a big influence in his decision to continue his music focus on performance at college. It was overall a wonderful experience for him.
