Summer Programs 2009! It's that time of year again.

I second SJTH's recommendation. Son did Eastman jazz program twice. If a player is interested in attending Eastman, it's a great way to get to know the school and some of the faculty. In the current freshman class, there are at least 6 students who did Summer Jazz.

My d attended NYSMF two summers ago and LOVED it. A wonderful program and she still keeps in touch with the friends she made there. They have two week intensive workshops that she really enjoyed for flute. Last year she attended Interlochen and claimed that to be the best summer of her life. (I cannot tell you how much we enjoyed going for visits. It is absolutely beautiful and magical.) She is a senior this year. We have just finished the college pre screening cd's and are looking at summer requirements. As of now, she is planning to apply to Tanglewood, Brevard and Interlochen.

My son, currently a high school sophomore, will be attending Interlochen for the fourth summer as a percussionist. He won't even think of applying anywhere else. Thinks it's heaven on earth!

My son also had 2 inspiring and fun summers at Point Counterpoint Chamber Music Camp in Vermont.

i just got permission to try out for music@menlo's international program. they don't typically take double bass, so i'm happy that i'll be able to give their auditions a go!

can anyone help me find a summer program for engineering...
i am a junior in high school
i have a 3.6 GPA (national honor society)
i am a hispanic

please and gracias

chicalatina-
This is more of a music thread, but maybe look into Carnegie Mellon? They have a Pre College Progam that is incredible....but really not sure what majors are offered. I would imagine the top engineering schools would offer something in the summer......

I would just like to put in a good word for BUTI (Boston U. Tanglewood Institute), and in particular the composition program. My son did that last summer, and had an excellent experience. He also came away with really good recordings of his pieces played by both professionals and top student players, and they greatly enhanced his music supplement, in my opinion. Warning: here comes the brag: he was just accepted at Yale, and I'm convinced that BUTI and the supplement were very helpful. Thanks again to those who gave us advice when he was looking at summer programs.

Big congrats to your son, Hunt!

Wow hunt - he won the lottery- Congratulations to you and to him!!

Wonderful news Hunt - congratulations!!

Here we go again - just after getting the older one settled in for her Music Ed program, my younger D (currently in 8th gr.) will be applying to Interlochen for Flute.

Any other suggestions within 5 hours or so of Cleveland?
thanks
JADIO

No suggestions. Just hearty support for an Interlochen summer! Linde

Hey,

Just got accepted to the International Junge Orchesterakademie at the Bayreuth Easter Festival!

Not sure that I can go because it's in April...

The Bayreuth Festival also has a summer portion - the Young Artists' Bayreuth Festival - which I will probably apply for, but they haven't posted their audition information yet.

wow - that's great cosmos - you should have a great experience there!

S very much enjoyed the Portland String Quartet summer workshop, and it significantly advanced his musicianship. It used to be located at Colby College in Maine, but they have moved to St. Joseph's College, on a lakeshore closer to Portland. And with A/C in the rehearsal/performance spaces. :)

Hey guys,
Just got an acceptance from the Young Artists' Bayreuth Festival! So, unless I am lucky enough to get into Lucerne or Tanglewood, I'll be in Bayreuth this August at the Richard Wagner Festival. The haven't updated their website with conductor/faculty info yet (that will be up in February), but in the past they've had conductors like Donald Runnicles and Pierre Boulez at their festival, so I have high hopes that whoever they get will be great.

Has anyone attended this program? Any feedback about how good it might be? We were also looking at the Eastman Program. My concern there is that there's no focus on language or opera scenes or movement. I understand from talking to them it's a freshman year type curriculum with a fair amount of "time off" for study and practice. I also questioned the faculty and although the faculty listed are from Eastman, I was told that is not who teaches the classes. My D is interested in applying to Eastman for undergrad after we had a great visit there this fall. However, the summer schedule doesn't look enticing. COMMENTS? Or other suggestions?

Can anyone recommend an intensive, hands-on training program for a 15 year old cellist who has been studying for 6 years? He has been to Interlochen for 3 summers, and would like to work more on individual playing and technique, but is perhaps just short of the Bowdoin/Tanglewood/Marymount level. He is advanced, but in need of intensive one on one with perhaps less orchestra. Thoughts? thank you!

Cellistmom, look into NYSMF, the New York Summer Music Festival. In addition to the orchestral and ensemble experiences, you can also pay extra for individual lessons, with no limit on how many lessons per week. Check out the instructors, they are of pretty high caliber, the camp gets most of its instructors from the Philly-NYC music arena.
Also check out the tuition; I think even if you did sign up for a lesson every day, you'd still be well below Interlochen. It's held on a college campus, so while the atmosphere is relaxed and fun for the kids, it's definitely a music, music, music emphasis.
