My S will be attending Interlochen this summer. He is a percussionist.

I just got accepted to Brevard Music Festival for violin today! And I got some money so it looks like I may be going! I'm really excited!

DS will be attending the Oberlin in Italy program.

Juggling Mom....my S went to Italy with Oberlin last summer, and had the time of his life:) What a great experience it is for them!!

bluepearl,

Round Top - congratulations! Your D will likely be one of the youngest. Its an 18 and over program. Your D is obviously a mature player for her age!

Great violin faculty - the kids "sign up" for lessons with teacher of choice (depending on availability:

Conductors & Faculty - The International Festival-Institute at Round Top

Unlike some of the other summer orchestra programs, Round Top has a nice mixture of time spent in orchestra, chamber music and private practice. Some of the other programs spend 80 percent or more of the time in orchestra - some teachers think this is not necessarily best for developing violinists. (unlike wind players - orchestra playing is great for them - lots of solo and one-on-a part work)

Kids I know like the facilities - dorms, practice rooms, recreation, etc.

I've known cellists and violinsts who've returned for year 2 at Round Top - always a good sign.

We just got back from a trip to Austin and went out to Round Top. What a beautiful place! They are building a new facility for the musicians and it should be ready for the summer. It was a Sunday, so everything was locked up. But we strolled around the grounds, had our picnic next to the chapel where there is a stone patio - absolutely amazing. The town of Round Top is charming as well. Congrats to bluepearl's D.

Thanks, everyone. Fiddlestix, her being the youngest kid is our main concern, but I think (and she thinks) she can handle it. We had decided that with college expenses coming up, she would apply to some free summer programs--Round Top was the most competitive, I think, so we were surprised and delighted when she was accepted.
Violinmom, thanks for the report on your visit to Round Top. Sounds like my daughter is in for a great summer!

Bluepearl, I didn't intend my age comment to indicate a concern or judgment. Sorry! Just expressing my sincere congrats for the acceptance! I'm sure she won't have any trouble being in the mix - and, if it helps, the handful of kids I've known you have been to Round Top in the last several years were uniformly very decent young adults. Representative of the best types of kids she'll find at music school next fall!

DD accepted at Round Top (viola) and waiting on news from a few others.

So here is an interesting situation for you to ponder; let me know your thoughts.

I applied for Music@Menlo's International Program - the one for ages 18-29. They don't take basses, but I contacted the artist-faculty bass player and he told me that he gives me permission to apply and he'll talk to the director of the program about me. My application was received and they cashed the app fee check and contacted me to say that they were considering me, etc.

What kind of chance do you think I have at this program? I know it's a top chamber program, but, as the only bass applying (I would think), does that change things at all? I really want to go - for the record - it is one of my top choices, if not top choice.

Cosmos, I repeat what I told you here:

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1061296233-post7.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1061296233-post7.html</a></p>

Maybe you can consider switching to cello ;)

Good luck.

Thank you for the insight.
There are many differences between Menlo and Steans that might help me out... for one, they do have a bassist as an artist-faculty who I could work with; it also quite a forward-thinking place. They are very much into contemporary music and they have this cool lecture series on the history of the various pieces they program... Sounds like a really cool place.

Of interest to violists:

Hi - I'm the cellist of the Colorado Quartet and we run a 2-week string quartet
camp (Soundfest) in Massachusetts on Cape Cod, June 20-July 3. We need VIOLISTS
in all levels (ages are 10-college). College students usually coach younger
groups in exchange for fellowships.

Please go look at our website: Soundfest: Index or email me for more
info. Scholarships available. It's a rewarding program, with great music, great
connections and fabulous experience.
Thanks,
--Diane

And the webpage is here Soundfest: Index.

No experience with the program, but son has worked with the Colorado Quartet, and they are exceptional musicians. I offer it more as fill in, or an additional option, or a change for a college student to get some coaching mentoring experience in teaching younger groups.

Cosmos, you probably have a better shot at Menlo than Steans, due to that flexibility.
