I agree with you. My D did as you say. Unfortunately there is no place to put a grade, or even an explanation of the course content or its name. This is why you might want to consider using the EC space. You could probably get 20 words into one EC block. If your EC space is full, you could also consider using the other information space at the end of the application. Don't try and fill the space, however. Just two bullets, date, university, name of course, course description and your grade.

You need to submit a transcript from any college where you took summer courses to the college you are applying to. Then the college you are applying to will see you did well on the college courses you have taken. (Am I missing something here?)

No, you're not missing anything. But just like my d put her SAT scores on the Common App, even though she's sent an official report, she wanted a place to put her college course. That way, if the transcript went missing, they'd at least know to look for it!

Summer programs can be for college, high school or no credit. For example, EPGY at Stanford is not for credit, and is not graded, but is very rigorous. Hard to know where and how to characterize these kinds of courses on the Common App, without using up essays and ECs! There was no transcript or grade report generated, just a page long commentary on student performance, which was very valuable to my D, but not something to put with an application. I thought the OP might be trying to talk about a course like that....
