Summer programs at penn?

do participating in summer programs at penn help in the admissions process by showing that you are interested in the school?

Which one did you do? Just curious.

Not really. Just shows interest.

i did the pre college program at penn one summer and an internship program at penn another summer

yes it does. i actually think it's stronger than legacy because two of my friends who were nearly identical in all aspects, except for their SAT scores which differed by a margin of 80 points, applied ED. The one who had legacy got deferred while the one who attended summer programs got accepted. Also, you took college courses at UPenn, so that shows not only a lot of interest but that you can do well at UPenn. BTW, what's your name, 'cause I attended the PSAS program summer of '05 and the precollege program this past summer.

Um, I highly doubt that ^.
The non-legacy could've have much better, more unique essays.

I think taking a summer study course at a college is a good experience to have, and something that definitely won't hurt you in the admissions process, but the school at which you take the classes doesn't really make a difference.

i reallly hope penn summer programs help. i went to leadership in the business world last summer and it was amazing. plus it really helped with the "choose a penn professor..." and "why penn" essays

LBW does not affect anything. I asked Stetson about it and he said, "that doesn't mean anything."

LBW does not help at all. I asked Stetson about it and he said, "that doesn't mean anything."

do my summer programs and the fact that both of my brothers graduated from penn help in the admissions process?

I think legacy helps. I don't think summer programs should. Not everyone can afford $5000 plus airfare to spend on one kid one summer. My parents definitely can't so I couldn't attend the cornell one last summer.

although sibling isnt legacy (for penn anyway), it probably helps

I would like to say that it is highly untrue that LBW does not do anything at all. I think that it helps out IMMENSELY. What Mr. Stetson was saying was that it will not automatically help you get in or not. A few things it did do: 1) allow you to become extremely familiar with the people and campus of penn, making the application much easier 2) become familiar with faculty which is helpful for that which penn professor question 3) show that you have been interested in penn for a while 4) Great essay topics 5) you sould not live your life based on what "looks good for penn". 6) it shows you were a distinctive applicant because u were chosen by WHARTON FACULTY out of hundreds of people. 7) you should do things you enjoy doing and/or will get a good experience from, not just things that will "look good".

right, but the program itself wont help you get into the school... thats how it sounds stetson meant it

Well, I wouldn't say it doesn't help. It does help, but it doesn't hold that much weight. For some applicants, however, it could be that extra push that they need.

its just another activity that youve done... i dont think that just cuz its at penn would make it ne different than if it was elsewhere

Well, I guess it really depends which summer program you do. For ex, some programs may offer college credit. If you were accepted, you'd be accepted with that starting GPA. If it's a summer sports program for tennis, however, I can see how that would be viewed as just another activity.

Plus, it does give an advantage to the student when he writes the why Penn essay.

i got accepted this past summer into Penn's Summer Academy for Applied Science and Technology Bioengineering program...but i didn't go because i had already sent in my check to attend the Columbia summer bioengineering program (due to deadlines). do you think they will discount me for this decision, as i really enjoyed my time at Columbia and got a lot out of it? i even wrote about it in my essays and short answers.

youll be fine... they wont count it against you cuz you applied, when it mattered, ED to penn so i dont think it woudl really matter that much

I did LBW and now i'm in wharton. Out of the 60 kids who did lbw with me, something like 28 got in. Summer programs like lbw, if properly taken advantage of can make a big difference
