Summer programs for an 8th grader (gifted young lady)

My daughter is in 8th grade. She wanted to go one of the Duke TIP Summer programs, but she needed to take the SAT to see if she qualifies. She scored 1710 in her SAT, which made her qualify for the Center Summer at Duke, but it is too late in the game now, since most of the spots are already taken. Does anyone know any good Marine program that we can look into? She would love to do something related to ocean and marine life, and Duke is not an option this year anymore.

Totally unrelated to science and marine … but I think the Concordia Language Villages programs are awesome. They are fun but also challenging.

Check out institute for educational advancement. It’s an organization that helps parents of gifted kids. They also have lots of resources for a varietynof programs.

Johns Hopkins CTY still has spots.

Brown has a summer science program for middle schoolers: [SPARK - Science for Middle School | Brown University](http://www.brown.edu/ce/pre-college/spark/).

Not positive about this, but I think COSMOS has marine bio programs.
They are held in CA at 4 UC campuses. Not sure if 8th graders can apply, but check it out.

I’m an 8th grader with a 2240. Here’s the main talent searches that I know of.
JHU CTY
JHU SET
JHU Grand Award
Duke TIP
Northwestern NUMATS
Colorado School of Mines CBK
Jack Kent Cooke foundation

Hopefully this helps a bit. Some are more prestigious and selective (SET: over 700 on the SAT CR or M under 13 years old) though.

Not sure how far it would be for you, but my 8th grade D went to Satori Camp last summer, which is housed at Eastern WA University. It is for gifted youth 12-18, but you self-identify rather than test in. It’s a week long, and each day kids have 3 classes in a range of subjects that they choose, plus time in the afternoons for swimming, skating, dancing, etc. She can’t wait to go back. It was FAR cheaper than Duke or CTY. Of course, it’s not on the ocean, but your D might still find classes she likes.

They are used to kids flying in alone and run vans to and from the Spokane airport for pick up and delivery. Some of the kids have been going back for years. D has offered to pay half with her own money (not that she HAS that much!) this year, she loved it so much.

Some more:
Davidson THINK
Davidson Young Scholars
Rocky Mountain Talent Search
Stanford’s EPGY program… Not exactly a talent search but it offers courses

Yes, 8th graders are allowed. 1 month. Competitive selection. Deadline 2/22/13
[Cluster 8: Marine Mammals and Oceanography: From Prey to Predators](http://cosmos.ucsc.edu/clusters/c8.html)

Wow! Thanks, keep on posting please!

As a middle schooler my D used to go to CIMI. (a sea camp not a university program) She was an avid diver and sailor. They have spots for HS students as well. The sea life around Catalina is fantastic, as is the diving.

[Catalina Sea Camp - Marine Biology and Island Adventure Camp for Teens](http://www.cimi.org/catalinaseacamp.html)

Something like that would work too, but California is too far away. We live in Venezuela now, and we will be traveling to Central Florida to help my middle child move to college, but California is too far and too expensive for me… :frowning:
Thank you though…

There is a JHU program studying Chesapeake Bay, that’s housed at the main JHU campus. Not sure if it’s still open, but I remember seeing it in the brochures my kids received.

I think that Stanford’s OHS Summer Session will be on the pacific coast and the ecosystem there… You might want to check that out. I’m not sure whether the info has been posted yet though; I just remember seeing something about that in home room (I’m an OHSer)

does anyone know any programs that don’t require previous sign ups before you take the SAT/ACT? as in you can just send them a score report after you take the test?

Talent searches will all take scores from sittings not through the talent search. Just ask them how to send in your scores.

NASA Inspire is online and free, I believe.

JBA at Truman State University has a summer program for gifted middle school students. My daughter went last summer after her 7th grade and really liked it. Their program is very similar to Duke TIP but only cost about 1/2. The classes were taught by college professors. I believe the deadline is passed though. :(

No SAT scores required, but definitely focused on marine science…Project Oceanology on the Avery Point Campus of the University of Connecticut (Project O is an educational non-profit) in Groton, CT. They offer one week paid resident programs - Ocean Camp. (they also offer a free, competitive 4-week research program, Ocean Diversity, for students finishing 8th grade and older, but you have to be a CT resident…for others who might be reading this thread…).
