I am a college freshmen interested in medicine, the sciences, and math. I have a special interest in global health. I was wondering if anyone had advice on the best way to spend my summer. I am interested in research or volunteering in global health.

Unfortunately, many of the research programs require that you are older (Amgen or REU) or an underrepresented minority (SMDEP). I also don't have money to spend on the summer except possibly for air fare.

Does anyone have advice?

bump

(In other words) What did you do over your summers?

I suggest volunteering at a Hospital or something to get some clinical experience, which is what I did last summer, in the Emergency Room <3.

Perhaps some form of study abroad/medical mission?

what every one else said.

BUT. go ahead and apply to some REUs that you think you’ll have a chance in… I’m a sophomore now, but I applied to REUs last summer and actually got into one. Just because you’re a freshman doesn’t mean that you can’t into one… yes, it’s much harder, but it’s definitely doable.
PM if you have any questions about it and/or need some direction on which programs would take freshmen or be more willing to take freshmen. :)

clcgirl - Just out of curiosity, where did you go? I applied to a few last year, though I know for a fact I wasn’t prepared enough, didn’t have enough coursework under my belt, etc…
