Can someone suggest any good summer programs for middle schoolers (entering 8th grade)? I am aware of the CTY. Are there any other such programs in the East Coast?

CTY is the only one I know of. Being a 7th grader the options are pretty limited.

For the last 5 years I have gone to Camp Dudley in Westport, NY campdudley.org (Now I'm a leader). It might not be Academic or anything, but it will teach you a lot of good values and create friendships for life, the alumnus network is amazing. I went through MIT last summer and I had a camp sweatshirt on and one of the professors was like hey whats your camp number. Now I'm sort of just ranting in run-ons because I'm missing summer right now.

GL finding a program

My son is also going into 8th grade -- take a look at brown university spark program, condordia language villages, CTD in Chicago and the summer program at Andover. These are just a few -- try a google search, there are actually quite a few. my son did the three week CTD program last year and loved it and definitely wants to go this year. Admission via a portfolio isn't too hard if your child is smart and hard-working but doesn't have the test scores.

Looked it up, Andover Summer Session has a lower school program for Rising 8th and 9th graders. Andover is an amazing setting for learning and is a great combination of academic and social time. Both my parents and a handful of friends attend the school, all have said its an amazing experience. Facilities are wonderful and faculty is warm and receptive.

CTY--how much does this cost? I searched on the net, but couldn't find it.

Choate also has a summer program for kids in middle school.

CTY is like 3000$ not counting fees like books and supplies . but you've completely missed the dates for testing .
4th or younger take scat or something weird like that
5-6th take the plus test
7th and up take sat

testing is not required for CTD, you can do teacher recs and whatever standardized testing was done in school. It is not too late to apply for CTD and they offer financial aid if you demonstrate need.

There is a lot of programs for raising 8th graders, especially in math and science. You just need to tell what area you are interested in and where you are located (what state).

cty has a lot of sites on the east coast...its really good.

also, there's sig (summer institute for the gifted). not as good as cty, a lot more expensive, and it isnt that great education-wise. social life and recreational are pretty good.

but i'd recommend cty to anyone who qualifies.

Ya ya,

It is in New Jersey that I am looking for programs in Math and Science.

hypermom

I applied to Andover Summer Session and I really hope that I am able to go. It's only for about 4 1/2 weeks, and the academics seem great. I want to major in Speech and Debate and either minor in International Relations or Accelerated Elementary French so I could start French II in the fall. I'm going into ninth grade next year.

Duke TIP is another program similar to CTY (from what I've heard).

What about camp? I mean, I know that these summer programs are really fun (I've done both academic and regular camps) but like, there's so much to be learned from regular sleepaway camp that you don't learn in a classroom.

You should look into it. I've been to a bunch and I could help, if you want. The best camps are in Maine.

^^

Like Camp Waziyatah?
I'm looking for a camp, camp. I think I might want to just relax for a summer, you know? While I'm still young, lol.

Which camps have been your favorite?

Are you a girl? In my experience, Girl's Camps have always been the cleanest and most drama-free places. They're fun, provided you get dances and stuff. Unless you're really little, and then it doesn't matter.

My favorite camp was Fernwood Cove. It's an all girl's camp in Maine. It's like 4 weeks long. If you want a 7 week camp, there's Camp Fernwood, which is like FC's sister camp. There's everything at Fernwood Cove. You can try anything from making pj pants to rock climbing to waterskiing, wakeboarding, field hockey, lacrosse, basketball, volleyball, ceramics, low ropes, musical theater, etc. It's very well rounded.

I went to Wekeela and Robin Hood in Maine, and those are both pretty good co-ed camps. I heard that it sucks to be a guy in Robin Hood because they have chemical toilets. They also had like 6 showers for 100 girls, so the lines were annoying. I went there when I was 10 for one year. Also, they don't affiliate with any religion, but they do recite the Lord's prayer despite the fact that like half the camp is Jewish, which was weird... The camp wasn't really bad, but I didn't really like it so much. They had a bunch of pointless rules (like you can't leave the dining room area when you're finished eating after lunch so you spend like 45 minutes doing nothing) and it was a little too spiritually loaded for me (they spent HOURS teaching us how to sing together a song for the last night of camp. It was ridiculous).

Wekeela was fun, as far as I remember, but it's huge. There are way too many people at that camp, though, and I feel like it kind of takes away from the experience.

I went to a camp in Switzerland, but I don't think that qualifies as a regular camp experience. It was fun, though.

If you find camps in Maine, you could ask me about them. These are the camps I went to, but I do know about other ones. I've seen them through swim meets and stuff, and I have plenty of friends who have gone to different ones, so I know all about their reputations and stuff.

hypermom,

I am sorry I missed the post.

Is your child boy or girl? If you have a girl she is an underrepresented minority so you can apply for this FREE residential camp.

http://theharrisfoundation.org/programs/summersciencecamp/index.htm - all camps
http://theharrisfoundation.org/programs/summersciencecamp/njit.htm - camp in NJ

If you have a boy please be more specific about your child interests.

What kind of math and science? Engineering, space, chemistry, biology, physics?
Are you looking for residential or commute program?

Are you looking for a free or paid program? If you are looking for a paid program does the price matter?

Ya Ya -- if you know of some camps for middle schoolers, could you list them and provide links? This site will be even more travelled next year and lists of camps will come in handy for parents and students next year.

Most of the opportunities from my list are in Texas, some are in other states or nationwide, but not too many.

I'll look at the list at home.

Marine Biology residential camp in Galveston, TX.
http://www.tamug.edu/seacamp/

Space Science residential camp in Vestal, NY

If anyone would like info on CTY, I'd be glad to chime in.....for our family, CTY was completely and simply awesome. PM me with any specific questions (altho earlier poster is correct, by now it may be difficult/impossible to get into). D#1 went for 4 years straight, D#2 went for 2 years, but other summer travel plans, etc. precluded her for going last year or this year (her last year of being eligible). We moved to NC a couple of years ago. From what I can see, Duke TIP is essentially the same kind of experience. For the right kinds of kids, these programs are life-changing.
